Consultant - Emergency General Surgery (EGS)

Join the Royal Cornwall Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to provide high‑quality Emergency General Surgery (EGS) services. The Department is fully funded and supported through the National Forum for Acute Surgeons.

We are appointing EGS Consultants with a subspecialty interest in Colorectal, Paediatrics or complex interventional endoscopy. The successful applicant will join an existing team of Emergency Surgeons and be supported in developing subspecialty interests within their job plan.

• Work with current specialty leads to build working patterns and operating procedures for the department, including wards, operating theatres and ambulatory care.
• Develop and use ambulatory and alternative provision models to support patient care.
• Provide an EGS service of the highest standards for Cornwall.
• Develop a specialty interest in children’s surgery, colorectal, upper GI surgery, hepatobiliary or complex endoscopy.
• Share responsibility with colleagues for day‑to‑day management of the EGS department, including research portfolio development.
• Teach and train junior staff and medical students, developing weekly evidence‑based governance and service development.
• Maintain continuing development via Continuing Medical Education (CME).
• Fulfill duties of the weekly timetable, including out‑of‑hours work.
• Provide patient cover for off‑site or absent consultants.
• Engage in flexible timetabling where possible.
• Support the multidisciplinary team and promote a culture of respect.

• Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice.
• On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of interview.

• Teaching (medical students, peers, MDT).
• Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance.
