Overview
Coastal Carriers is seeking an experienced Diesel Shop Manager to oversee all maintenance, preventative maintenance (PM), inventory control, warranty administration, and roadside repair coordination for an over-the-road refrigerated trucking and trailer fleet, ensuring maximum equipment uptime, DOT compliance, and disciplined cost management.
Responsibilities- Oversee maintenance, PM programs, inventory control, warranty administration, and nationwide roadside repair coordination for a refrigerated fleet to maximize uptime and DOT readiness while managing costs.
- Tractor Platforms: Freightliner and Peterbilt tractors with strong knowledge of Detroit Diesel and Cummins engines; proficiency with Detroit Connect diagnostics, PACCAR vehicle and electrical systems, and advanced emissions systems (DPF, DEF, SCR), including regeneration and fault diagnostics.
- Trailer & Refrigeration Systems: Refrigerated trailer maintenance and inspection standards, with hands-on expertise in Thermo King refrigeration units, including preventive maintenance, diagnostics, field-level troubleshooting, and warranty coordination with authorized service providers.
- Preventative Maintenance & Roadside Support: Design and enforcement of tractor and trailer PM programs; monitoring of service intervals, inspections, and DOT readiness; nationwide roadside repair management including vendor coordination, remote troubleshooting, cost validation, invoice approval, and analysis of breakdown trends to reduce downtime.
- Manage all shop parts and consumables inventory
- Maintain items such as filters, belts, hoses, sensors, brakes, fluids, and refrigeration components
- Establish min/max levels and reorder points
- Coordinate purchasing to avoid stock-outs while controlling carrying costs
- Track inventory usage and cost by unit, repair type, and PM event
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and parts accountability
- Control shrinkage and unauthorized usage
- Coordinate core returns and warranty-related parts tracking
- Integrate inventory data with Fleetrock maintenance records
- OEM warranty administration for Detroit Diesel, Cummins, PACCAR components, and Thermo King
- File, track, and reconcile warranty claims
- Manage relationships with dealerships, OEMs, and third-party repair vendors
- Negotiate labor rates and service expectations where applicable
- Fleetrock – maintenance scheduling, work orders, inventory tracking
- McLeod TMS – coordination with operations and dispatch
- People Net (or equivalent ELD/telematics)
- Driver communications
- Fault code monitoring
- Mileage, idle, and utilization data
Ability to lead shop personnel, mobile technicians, and external vendors while setting maintenance priorities aligned with dispatch schedules and load commitments. Proven track record of enforcing safety standards, SOPs, and shop discipline, training drivers on proper equipment care, pre-trip inspections, and issue reporting, and communicating clearly and effectively with operations, safety, and executive leadership.
Compliance & Performance Focus- DOT compliance and inspection readiness
- Accurate maintenance and inventory documentation
- KPI tracking and reporting: PM compliance, roadside repair frequency, cost per mile, inventory turns and parts spend, equipment uptime
7-10+ years of experience in heavy-duty truck and refrigerated fleet maintenance, with prior experience as a Shop Manager supporting over-the-road (OTR) operations. Proven ability to manage parts and inventory for multi-state, 24/7 fleet environments, with a strong mechanical foundation and demonstrated leadership accountability.
