Position: Registered Nurse - OR

The Pre-Operative Registered Nurse is responsible for performing comprehensive physical and psychological assessments and initiating individualized pre-operative care plans to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.

Schedule
  • Monday‑Friday
  • 2‑3 days per week
  • Hours:

    Approximately 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., with 1‑2 late days as needed
Education, Training, and Experience Required
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Pre‑Operative Nurse
  • Completion of a critical care course, including basic arrhythmia interpretation
  • Current CPR certification
Preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • ACLS certification
  • Operating Room circulation experience
  • Scrubbing and Sterile Processing Department (SPD) experience
Reporting Relationship
  • Reports to the Director of Nursing, Area Manager, or Supervisor
Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Assessment
  • Perform comprehensive physical and psychological assessments prior to surgery or treatment
  • Initiate and manage individualized pre‑operative care plans
  • Verify patient identity using armband and verbal confirmation
  • Obtain and document vital signs, medical history, and physical assessment
  • Assess patient understanding of procedures and verify surgical consent accuracy
  • Obtain consent signatures when appropriate
  • Verify surgical site with the patient
  • Assess and address patient anxiety, providing comfort and emotional support
  • Maintain patient privacy, safety, and comfort at all times
Pre‑Operative Preparation
  • Review daily surgery schedules and obtain physician orders as needed
  • Administer pre‑operative medications as prescribed and monitor patients until transfer to the OR
  • Initiate IV therapy using aseptic technique
  • Prepare procedure rooms and set up patient care equipment
  • Ensure physician orders, history and physicals, and documentation are complete
  • Communicate test abnormalities or concerns to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative staff
Patient & Family Education
  • Provide and review pre‑operative instructions with patients and families, including:
    • Arrival time
    • NPO status
    • Clothing requirements
    • Approximate length of stay
    • Medication instructions
    • Post‑operative home care needs
    • Requirement for a responsible adult to drive the patient home
    • Overview of the day‑of‑surgery experience
  • Keep family members informed of patient progress
Documentation & Compliance
  • Accurately document assessments, care, and medications in the patient record
  • Adhere to all facility policies and procedures
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
Professional Conduct
  • Report to work as scheduled or notify management promptly if unable to report
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Foster positive working relationships with physicians, staff, and leadership
  • Demonstrate a patient‑focused and quality‑driven approach
  • Perform all duties in a timely and professional manner
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by management
Physical Demands
  • Ability to maintain high levels of visual and auditory acuity
  • Frequent movement throughout the facility; ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and position patients and equipment
  • Lift up to:
    • 5 lbs constantly
    • 10 lbs frequently
    • 30 lbs occasionally
    • Up to 40 lbs occasionally during patient care
    • Up to 100 lbs rarely with assistance
  • Ability to perform overhead, low‑reaching, and repetitive movements
Continuing Education & Professional Development
  • Maintain current CPR certification
  • Complete required continuing education credits
  • Participate in all in‑service training programs
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Learn and adapt to new procedures, equipment, and technologies
