Job Overview

Approximately 20 hours per week associated with Pea River biodiversity and watershed management, to include (but not limited to) the following duties:

Responsibilities
  • Coordinating communication and general outreach activities between Troy University faculty, undergraduate mentors, local high school science teachers, and their students.
  • Assisting in the development of core Environmental Science curriculum facilitated by undergraduate mentors to middle and high school students.
  • Assisting in the administration of data collection, record keeping, and evaluation tools as needed.
  • Conducting freshwater mussel surveys of the Pea River and assisting with other related field activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a current Troy University graduate student enrolled in at least six credit hours.
  • Ability to travel regionally in a personal vehicle or State vehicle when available; travel will be reimbursed via approved project funds.
  • Ability to work in strenuous outdoor, underwater conditions.
  • Knowledge of river and stream biodiversity and management.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in environmental outreach education.
  • BS degree in biology, environmental science, or related.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with freshwater mussels.
  • Experience with creating and implementing environmental education activities.
  • Ability and enthusiasm for working with middle and high school students.
Driving Requirement

Driving may be necessary but is not a primary responsibility.

Work Hours

As conditions permit, generally within Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hazardous Conditions or Physical Demands

Position will include physically demanding work in remote areas, including exposure to the elements, sunny and often wet conditions, biting insects, poisonous plants, and venomous snakes. Laboratory and office work will include extensive time indoors using a laptop or desktop computer.
