Overview

Job Summary . The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in-house position which ensures that safe, high quality, evidence-based care is provided to obstetric patients and that hospital resources are managed in a clinically appropriate way. In sites where residents and/or medical students are present this may include resident supervision and education. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is the primary, first line provider who is expected to be immediately available and present during the entirety of their shift.

ASSIGNMENT: 24 Hour In-House Call Coverage Program

LOCATION:

High volume labor and delivery units (>3,000 deliveries per year).

Responsibilities
  • Prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring that all inpatient obstetric care meets and/or exceeds current standards of care.
  • Identification and remediation of any area of clinical concern via collaboration with the obstetric care team, which may include: medical students, nursing staff, resident OB/GYN and/or family medicine physicians, maternal fetal medicine fellows, advanced practice providers (including certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners), and private and/or faculty attending OB/GYN and/or family medicine physicians.
  • Collaborate with the charge nurse to manage unit resources in a clinically appropriate, need-based way, which may include prioritization of pending labor inductions and pending cesarean deliveries.
  • Provide on-site, restricted obstetric care for patients who: a) have had no prenatal care, b) have had prenatal care with staff service, c) have had prenatal care with a provider who does not have privileges at the facility, or d) have had prenatal care with a provider who is unable to be present due to emergency or other circumstances.
  • Facilitate transfers from outside hospitals, including accepting medically appropriate transfers, informing relevant obstetric/neonatal team members of pending arrivals, and management of transfer upon arrival.
  • Lead scheduled safety huddles and post-event debriefing sessions.
  • Provide clinical assistance to other OB/GYN attendings, advanced practice providers, and, if applicable, resident physicians, which may include: a) second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretations, b) assistance in managing obstetric emergencies (e.g., shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhage), c) surgical assistance with cesarean deliveries and obstetrical laceration repair, d) multifetal deliveries.
  • Supervise and support resident physicians in their management of obstetrics patients in facilities with residents, which may include triage evaluation and management and antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management.
Qualifications
  • Required Doctorate;
    Graduate of approved Medical College
  • LIC-Physician (MD) -  State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • LIC-Osteopathic Physician (DO) -  State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-DEA Registration -  State of Michigan Upon Hire required
