DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Extern will work under the direction and preceptorship of the RN. The RN will be accountable for the work performed by the Extern and will sign off and approve all work. Under the direction of the RN, the Extern will provide direct and indirect patient care and utilizing assessment skills communicate with physicians/Nurse Manager colleagues about changes in patient clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology.
Use the two patient identifier before providing any care, treatment or medication administration.
Perform head-to-toe assessments and reassessments.Assess/reassess patient pain and utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educate patients/family regarding pain management. Develop or revise plans of care.Perform patient care responsibilities taking into consideration the age appropriate standards of care.Understand and know medications, their correct administrations, side effects and perform the 5 rights of Medication Administration before administering any medications. Teach patients/families about medication.Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.Following graduation, the successful extern will be offered a permanent position with the hospital after passing NCLEX.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Student working on obtaining Current Colorado Registered Nurse LicenseStudent obtaining additional nursing experienceEDUCATIONAL
EXPERIENCE:
Pre Grad Student - The extern position provides the graduating student nurse with training opportunity to develop interviewing skills, clinical skills, critical thinking skills, clinical confidence, and a hands-on hospital experience. A flexible work schedule will be developed with the Extern which allows the priority to remain on nursing studies.
Student of an accredited nursing programCurrent BCLSCurrent ACLS, PALS/ENPC or completion within six monthsBasic EKG/telemetry course completion within 1 month of hirePHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
