DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Extern will work under the direction and preceptorship of the RN. The RN will be accountable for the work performed by the Extern and will sign off and approve all work. Under the direction of the RN, the Extern will provide direct and indirect patient care and utilizing assessment skills communicate with physicians/Nurse Manager colleagues about changes in patient clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology.

Use the two patient identifier before providing any care, treatment or medication administration.

  • Perform head-to-toe assessments and reassessments.
  • Assess/reassess patient pain and utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educate patients/family regarding pain management. Develop or revise plans of care.
  • Perform patient care responsibilities taking into consideration the age appropriate standards of care.
  • Understand and know medications, their correct administrations, side effects and perform the 5 rights of Medication Administration before administering any medications. Teach patients/families about medication.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Following graduation, the successful extern will be offered a permanent position with the hospital after passing NCLEX.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student working on obtaining Current Colorado Registered Nurse License
  • Student obtaining additional nursing experience
  • EDUCATIONAL

    EXPERIENCE:

    Pre Grad Student - The extern position provides the graduating student nurse with training opportunity to develop interviewing skills, clinical skills, critical thinking skills, clinical confidence, and a hands-on hospital experience. A flexible work schedule will be developed with the Extern which allows the priority to remain on nursing studies.

  • Student of an accredited nursing program
  • Current BCLS
  • Current ACLS, PALS/ENPC or completion within six months
  • Basic EKG/telemetry course completion within 1 month of hire
  • PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Continuous movement throughout the hospital
  • Intermittent bending, kneeling, and squatting
  • Continuous standing (up to 7 hours)
  • Ability to lift up to 30% of your body weight
  • Ability to read and understand English
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interact with physicians, patients, families and staff in a professional manner in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain matters of a confidential nature
  • Ability to remain calm in crisis situations
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations
