Mission

The Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks & Wildlife aim to develop, preserve, and enhance the state’s natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of citizens and visitors. The CPW mission is to maintain wildlife resources, provide a quality state parks system, and offer sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities.

Job Summary

Location:

Trinidad Port of Entry, Trinidad, Colorado. Responsibilities include boat inspection and decontamination to prevent invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels. The role may be performed independently or in pairs and requires early morning, evening, and weekend work.

Non‑Lead Inspector Responsibilities
  • Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities according to state regulations and standard protocols.
  • Inspect boats launching and leaving the area, ensuring compliance with invasive species regulations.
  • Provide public outreach on aquatic invasive species and distribute printed materials to reservoir visitors.
Lead Inspector Responsibilities
  • Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities as above.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training to inspection staff.
  • Create schedules and ensure shift coverage during operational hours.
  • Collect and verify accurate time‑keeping records for payroll.
  • Work with area lead to resolve staff and customer challenges and recommend hiring/firing decisions.
  • Ensure inspection station staff follow standardized protocols and complete accurate data entry.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and perform basic maintenance on the decontamination unit.
  • Provide public outreach on aquatic invasive species.
Basic Requirements
  • Good driving record and ability to work weekends, early morning and late evenings.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent customer service experience working with the public.
  • Position requires outdoor physical work involving climbing in and out of vessels or under trailers.
  • Reliable and timely.
  • Ability to self‑motivate and work independently.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older for Lead Position.
  • Must be 16 years of age or older for Non‑Lead Position.
  • Compliance with DNR‑120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive: maintain a safe driving record and valid driver license prior to driving a State‑owned vehicle. Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be reviewed for workers who have an assigned State fleet vehicle, are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position, or utilize the vehicle as a pool vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with boats, trailers, power washers, small engines and/or heavy equipment.
