This position is only open to Colorado state residents. However, vacancies that are located within 30 miles of the state border are exempt from the residency requirement. Therefore, applications will be considered from residents and non‑residents of Colorado for Trinidad.

This recruitment is for the Trinidad Correctional Facility. The eligibility list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.

The Safety Specialist III position is a Life Safety Coordinator for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Trinidad Correctional Facility in Trinidad, CO. This position will create, implement, and maintain safety program practices that assure compliance with American Correctional Association Standards, as well as compliance with all federal, state and local fire codes, health standards and hazardous materials regulations by observing operations, conditions, incidents, procedures or physical surroundings and equipment.

• Ensures staff have access to, are trained to, and understand the facility emergency plan, must possess thorough knowledge of the facility emergency plan and hot spot locations.
• Provide annual updates to fire prevention, hazardous material and worker safety operations procedure manuals.
• Create lesson plans and instruct on fire work safety, hazardous materials, iEvac Fire/Smoke Hood usage, suppression equipment, officer survival techniques and first aid.
• Assess facility need and compile budget requests for equipment and supplies essential to the safety program.
• Monitor compliance with American Correctional Association Standards as well as compliance with federal, state, and local fire codes, health standards, hazardous materials requirements and safety standards.
• Conduct fire/evacuation drills and fire suppression equipment checks.
• Advise the management staff of inspection results and facility needs to meet standards and codes.
• Review new construction renovation plans (in‑house, capital equipment, controlled maintenance) for life‑safety issues.
• Schedule and inspect the facility for hazardous conditions relating to fire, hazardous materials and worker safety.
• Recommend corrective action or take immediate corrective action when unsafe conditions pose imminent danger to life or property.
• Ensure annual fire inspections are completed and appropriate plan of action is initiated if deficiencies are noted.
• Investigate all fires and work site accidents to determine the cause and origin.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Experience:

Six (6) years of professional work experience in a risk management, occupational health, life safety field or professional experience with code enforcement (defined as enforcing a set of rules, principles or laws) with a municipality. Experience must include inspections and staff training. The experience must be specifically documented on your application within the work experience section.
