Description Of Job

The Safety Specialist III position is a Life Safety Coordinator for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Trinidad Correctional Facility in Trinidad, CO. This position will create, implement, and maintain safety program practices that assure compliance with American Correctional Association Standards, as well as compliance with all federal, state and local fire codes, health standards and hazardous materials regulations.

Primary

Duties Include
  • Ensures staff have access to, are trained to, and understand the facility emergency plan, must possess thorough knowledge of the facility emergency plan and hot spot locations.
  • Provide annual updates to fire prevention, hazardous material and worker safety operations procedure manuals.
  • Create lesson plans and instructs on fire work safety, hazardous materials, iEvac Fire/Smoke Hood usage, suppression equipment, officer survival techniques and first aid.
  • Assess facility need and compiles budget requests for equipment and supplies essential to the safety program.
  • Monitors compliance with American Correctional Association Standards as well as compliance with federal, state, and local fire codes, health standards, hazardous materials requirements and safety standards.
  • Conducts fire/evacuation drills and fire suppression equipment checks.
  • Advises the management staff of inspection results and facility needs to meet standards and codes.
  • Reviews new construction renovation plans (in-house, capital equipment, controlled maintenance) for life-safety issues.
  • Schedules and inspects the facility for hazardous conditions relating to fire, hazardous materials and worker safety.
  • Recommend corrective action or take immediate corrective action when unsafe conditions pose imminent danger to life or property.
  • Ensures annual fire inspections are completed and appropriate plan of action is initiated if deficiencies are noted.
  • Investigates all fires and work site accidents to determine the cause and origin.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Required Competencies
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a comprehensive facility-wide program.
  • Ability to interpret and/or explain complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Impeccable organizational skills and compelling attention to details.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations.
  • Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience training others on life safety concerns.
  • Experience speaking to large groups.
  • ICC Certified in Portable Fire Extinguishers (maintenance/servicing).
  • Confined Space Entry Certified.
  • Certified Trainer in Confined Space Entry.
  • Asbestos Contractor/Supervision Certification.
  • Certified Asbestos Building Inspector.
  • Experience in the operation and/or maintenance of electronic fire/smoke detection systems.
