About the Role
With the growing development of Generative AI solutions at Elsevier, we need a conversational designer to support AI projects and build capabilities in-house. The role is ideal for someone interested in conversational AI technologies and passionate about creating intuitive, user-friendly experiences for medical professionals.
About the TeamThis team is building a generative‑AI‑powered clinical decision support tool designed specifically to help healthcare professionals quickly find trusted, evidence‑based answers at the point of care. It combines a massive curated medical knowledge base with conversational AI so clinicians can ask questions in natural language and get concise, clinically relevant responses backed by real scientific evidence.
Qualifications- Current experience as a prompt engineer.
- Strong Python proficiency; experience with large language model APIs (OpenAI, Cohere, Anthropic, etc.).
- Expertise in LLM platforms/APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic).
- Deep expertise in prompt techniques (zero‑shot, few‑shot, chain‑of‑thought, function‑calling, role prompts) and evaluation methodologies.
- Prompt library and governance: version control (Git), documentation, templates, governance practices.
- Experience with retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), knowledge bases, or RAG pipelines.
- Experience designing and maintaining a prompt library; version control and governance practices.
- Familiarity with vector databases or embedding models (e.g., FAISS, Pinecone) and information retrieval concepts.
- Familiarity with safety, bias mitigation, and privacy considerations in AI systems.
- Design new conversational AI experiences or enhance existing ones, focusing on improving interactions between users and conversational AI agents.
- Optimize conversational agent responses to meet user expectations for length and information presentation.
- Apply behavioral science principles to design mechanisms that nudge user behavior toward better outcomes.
- Prototype conversational experiences and validate them with users to communicate concepts before development.
- Track performance of conversational AI agents using qualitative and quantitative data; turn insights into opportunities to improve the experience.
- Work closely with Product Managers and Data Scientists to optimize large language models in an agile development environment.
- Drive the creation and take ownership of Elsevier’s Conversational AI design Framework, documenting standards, processes and methods.
- Advocate for the Conversational AI Design community of practice and communicate the value of Conversational AI Design to stakeholders.
U.S. National Base Pay Range: $95,300 - $158,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates. If performed in New Jersey, the base pay range is $112,574 - $179,826. This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
