Bookkeeper/ Accounting Clerk, Accounting & Finance
St. Gregory the Great Church in Hamilton Square, New Jersey is seeking candidates for the full-time position of Senior Bookkeeper. The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for managing the financial records of the Parish and the school (St. Gregory the Great Academy), and performs all aspects of finance administration including accounts payable, payroll, bank reconciliations and financial reporting. The Senior Bookkeeper will maintain the general ledger, generate financial reports and ensure compliance with accounting principles and regulations.
This position reports the Parish Business Manager. Salary commensurate with experience.
For the Parish and the Academy
- Manage and maintain all transactions and financial records
- Manage and process accounts payable and all disbursements in accord with established process and procedures
- Oversee and process all collections, donations, tuition and other income receipts in accord with established process and procedures
- Perform bank and credit card reconciliations
- Create and analyze/monitor financial tracking reports, such as cash flow, check register, unpaid bills, etc.
- Manage and process payroll, including oversight of interfaces to employee benefits systems, funds transfers and other payroll disbursements
- File quarterly and annual payroll tax (the Parish does not pay sales or income tax)
- Track and monitor PTO for Parish employees (excludes Academy)
- Develop collaborative working relationships with the Academy principal, the Finance Council and other leadership members at the Parish
- Develop collaborative working relationships with colleagues at the Diocese of Trenton
Mandatory
- A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or commensurate experience
- A minimum of 7 years’ experience in bookkeeping or accounting
- Proficiency in accounting and payroll software
- Highly detail-oriented with attention to accuracy
- Expertise in MS Excel and proficiency in other MS Office products
- Well-developed organization and planning skills
- Demonstrated competency in a diverse technology platform is essential, including an aptitude to learn and use new tools
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Highly Desirable
- Experience as an employee or volunteer in a Catholic or other religious congregation
- Proficiency in nonprofit accounting, specifically religious organizations
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with the Paylocity HR and payroll platform
- Experience with the Parish Soft platform and suite of products
