About This PositionThis is specialized work that involves the safe crossing of school children and pedestrians and the control of traffic at school or other crossings. The role prevents accidents and protects the safety of children and pedestrians. Employees must wear a uniform on assignment and stand, walk, and use hand signals, whistles, and voice as needed.
Schedule RequirementsPlease Note: Applicants MUST be able to work both morning and afternoon shifts for all scheduled hours between 7:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This permanent part‑time position’s hours are not negotiable. School Crossing Guards must have reliable transportation for orientation, training, and all work locations. Applicants must accommodate schedule changes due to late arrivals, early dismissals, inclement weather, and other factors.
Work locations are not assigned by proximity to the applicant’s residence.

Examples of Work- Direct or escort school children and other pedestrians to cross the street at the school crossing guard signal and stop traffic as necessary.
- Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at designated crossings to allow safe crossing.
- Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps for children and pedestrians.
- Control the children using the crossing to ensure they follow traffic regulations.
- Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to school children and pedestrians.
- Report traffic hazards to the police or School Crossing Guard Supervisor.
- Report motorists who fail to comply with traffic laws.
- Appear in court to testify in cases involving violations of law, as needed.
- Report flagrant traffic violators, accidents, and hazardous conditions to the Supervisor and relevant school representative(s).
- Contact school officials regarding children who will not cooperate and pose a risk to themselves and others.
- Willingly and cooperatively perform tasks and duties beyond those listed, within the occupational category and responsibility level of the position.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Must pass police vision and hearing tests and/or other required examinations, including drug screening for marijuana/synthetic cannabis.
- Must be able to report to assigned training sites and work locations within one hour of notification, with reliable transportation.
- Must be reachable by phone during school hours to respond to scheduling changes.
- Must be willing to work in inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions.

Conditions of Employment- Pass vision and hearing tests and required examinations, including drug screening.
- Pass criminal and pre‑employment background checks.
- Be willing and able to work at multiple locations within the County with short notice.
- Report to assignments on time and perform assigned duties for the full scheduled duration.
- Attend monthly meetings, uniform inspections, and paperwork pick‑up or drop‑off as required.
- Attend mandatory yearly in‑service trainings, which may include extended days.
- Wear issued uniform and have reliable transportation for assignments within one hour of notification.
