Pre-Op/PACU RN Overview

The Pre-Op/PACU RN is responsible for the safety and care of patients in pre-operative and post-operative areas. The RN delivers individualized nursing care before administration and immediately following anesthesia emergence. The RN anticipates patient needs and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain electronic medical record; document unusual perioperative events.
  • Provide accurate preoperative instructions and discharge education.
  • Formulate patient‑specific plans based on pre‑existing conditions and advocate for patients.
  • Apply perioperative & ophthalmic nursing principles to pre‑ and postoperative care.
  • Administer medications safely, adhering to injection practices and controlled substance policies.
  • Participate in medication outdate checks and supply inventory maintenance.
  • Adhere to infection control policies and emergency preparedness procedures.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse licensed to practice nursing in Maryland.
  • BLS and ACLS required.
  • Greater than 2 years RN experience; at least 1 year in perioperative or sterile procedures setting.
  • Basic nursing performance standards and understanding of operating room equipment.
  • Recognition of narrative recording of unusual operating room events.
  • Ability to assess patients' needs: physical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and age appropriate.
