This position is being recruited and hired by Sheppard Pratt Solutions on behalf of Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). This per diem opportunity can include weekdays and weekends.
Whatto expect
The Crisis Assessment Clinician provides emergency psychiatric services to adults and children presenting to the GBMC Emergency Department. This role delivers comprehensive psychiatric assessments, crisis interventions, and collaborative care planning for patients with behavioral health needs, including mental health and substance use disorders. The clinician works both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, and other behavioral health staff—to ensure safe, patient-centered care, while maintaining compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational standards.
SpecificResponsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including mental status exams, diagnostic summaries, and level-of-care recommendations.
- Develop individualized care and disposition plans in collaboration with the ED team, implementing crisis intervention, short-term counseling, psychoeducation, advocacy, and referrals.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment to support crisis stabilization, efficiently mobilizing resources for patients, families, and hospital staff.
- Communicate proactively with physicians, care teams, patients, families, and community agencies to coordinate aftercare and mandated reporting (e.g., child, adult, elder abuse; domestic violence).
- Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Apply culturally competent practices to deliver patient-centered care sensitive to the demographic, cultural, and ethnic needs of the population.
- Maintain professional knowledge of relevant medical and legal issues impacting patient care, participate in continuing education, and engage in process improvement initiatives.

- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Mental Health, or related field; corresponding licensure (LCSW or LCPC) preferred.
- At least 2 years of recent clinical behavioral health experience in crisis intervention, physician’s office, clinic, hospital, emergency services, or equivalent settings.
- Experience using evidence-based practices in mental health and substance abuse.
- Licensure eligible preferred; graduation and training from an accredited graduate program required.
The pay range for this position is $47/hourly minimum to $50/hourly maximum. Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, board certifications and years and level of related experience.
