Overview

This position is a specific recruitment to serve as the Team Leader for the Traffic Safety Engineering Team in the Traffic Development and Support Division (TDSD). The Team Leader will provide leadership and management of day‑to‑day operations, evaluate safety benefits and impacts of transportation projects, and develop recommendations to improve safety.

Nature of Work
  • Evaluate safety benefits and impacts of transportation projects.
  • Develop recommendations to improve safety and support Maryland State Highway Administration’s systematic process for project development and funding.
  • Analyze crash data to identify patterns indicating systemic safety problems.
  • Co‑ordinate and facilitate analysis for highway safety engineering, education, and law‑enforcement efforts.
  • Serve as safety coordinator, oversee the Highway Safety Improvement Program, and develop the annual highway safety report.
Education

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience

Seven (7) years of professional engineering experience.

Selective Qualification

Three and a half (3 ½) years of experience involving traffic engineering.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of national and state guidelines and standards related to transportation engineering and safety analysis for highway networks.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate statewide programs and specific projects.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of database management and data analysis pertaining to safety on Maryland’s roads.
Notes
  • Additional work experience in professional engineering or technical engineering at the journey level or above may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • A master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the non‑supervisory experience.
  • Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in Maryland, or a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

Candidate must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the state of Maryland.
