As a ‘National ENR Top 25 General Contractor’ that values its employees and fosters a positive and supportive culture, Whiting-Turner is seeking a qualified mechanical, electrical and plumbing estimator for various commercial projects in a fast paced, entrepreneurial, team-based working environment.
Qualified candidates shall possess 5+ years of experience in MEP estimating within the construction industry. This role requires detailed takeoffs and estimating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for a variety of construction project types. This will include estimating from preconstruction through the various design stages. Estimators will coordinate with project teams, perform detailed takeoffs, cost reconciliations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations, building codes, and quality standards.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related field experience.
- Professional certification in MEP engineering or project management (e.g., PE, PMP, LEED, CCP) is a plus.
- Experience in one or all disciplines of MEP such as mechanical, electrical, controls, plumbing, fire alarm, fire protection, or special systems.
- Strong understanding of MEP design, field installation, building systems, construction methods, and project management principles.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledgeable with MEP codes and installation standards.
- Knowledge of energy‑efficient systems and sustainable building practices.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment.
- Knowledgeable in MEP estimating.
- Experience with writing MEP scopes of work.
- Pre‑Purchase of mechanical/electrical long lead equipment.
- Ability to layout systems and estimate in the concept stage.
- Knowledge of computer based estimating systems.
- Estimating MEP systems across various phases of the project, from concept designs through issued for permit drawings.
- Liaise with architects, engineers, and contractors to integrate MEP systems into the overall building design.
- Ensure the timely completion of MEP‑related tasks within the project deadlines.
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities to MEP team members, ensuring that the workload is balanced, and deadlines are met.
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members as needed.
- Review MEP designs and ensure they align with project specifications, building codes, and client requirements.
- Ensure the selection of appropriate materials and systems while considering cost, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
- Review MEP submittals and coordinate design modifications with other engineers.
- Manage the MEP project budget and ensure all MEP activities are completed within financial constraints.
- Monitor and control costs related to labor, materials, and equipment from the preconstruction process through various design stages.
- Reconciling the WT MEP estimate with Project Team, Owners, Owner’s Representatives, Engineers and 3rd party cost estimators.
- Review all MEP systems and documents for constructability and compliance with local codes, regulations, and safety standards.
- Develop, project specific, MEP scopes of work outlining subcontractor responsibilities.
- Work proactively to resolve conflicts between MEP systems and other building components.
- Communicate with clients to understand their needs and provide updates on project progress.
- Manage client expectations and ensure satisfaction with the quality and timeliness of MEP estimates, budgets, and reconciliations.
Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of the various factors identified above.
