Main Purpose of JobTo develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in an accessible environment and to provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to optimal social and emotional growth. The goal is to use sign language and printed word to meet the varied needs of Deaf students.
Position DutiesAssess and teach Deaf students, implementing Maryland’s state standards and developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning. Prepare and maintain weekly lesson plans based on student assessments and data, and teach lessons using best practices of bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction. Design and produce materials to aid student learning. Collect data and follow individualized planning.
Write quarterly progress reports, applying IEP accommodations and supplementary aids. Maintain a grade book, portfolios, unit plans, daily attendance, and emergency lesson plans. Use effective classroom management to optimize learning, manage student behavior, model appropriate behavior, and promote self‑control.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
- Must be eligible to apply for or willing to obtain Maryland State Department of Education certification within a prescribed period.
- Fluency in American Sign Language and written English is required.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf education, students with additional disabilities, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education or Special Education of Deaf students.
- Maryland State Department of Education Certification.
New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5‑560‑568). Candidates must provide three letters of recommendation with their application.

BenefitsContractual employees working 30 or more hours a week (or 130 hours a month on average) and with a current employment contract may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. You will pay 25% of premiums for medical and prescription coverage; the State of Maryland will cover the remaining 75%. Optional dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance are available, but you will pay the full premium for those benefits.
Leave may be granted at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
