The purpose of the Academic Advisor position within the Academic Advising, Retention, & Completion Office is to provide effective academic advising and educational assistance to a variety of student populations including students transferring to TU, first-year freshmen, students who are open majors, and students who are in academic difficulty and need additional support. The Academic Advisor serves as a resource for faculty, staff, students, and families on issues relating to academic requirements and student success.

The Academic Advisor serves as part of the team working with First Year Experience students. The advisor reports to the Senior Assistant Director of the First-Year Experience and assists in managing the academic programs for freshman students entering the University, including New Student Orientation, Freshman Registration, and the First-Year Experience Advising Program. This includes assisting in planning and implementing the Freshman New Student Orientation Program and supporting the advisor assignment processes for FYE students.

Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide effective academic advising services to first-year students, students on academic alert, below good standing, and academic monitoring, and second-year students without a declared major (one-to-one, small group, large group, and online formats); support Transfer students & their academic departments during the Transfer student New Student Orientation program.
  • Provide support for the new student registration program, assisting with training materials, Assist with monitoring course enrollments, managing course needs, supporting the registration assistants.
  • Work with the Senior Assistant Director on coordinating advisor assignments for first-year students, including facilitating the transfer of first-year students to academic departments at the close of the FYE year.
  • Assist with the organization of information and materials for New Student Orientation for first-year students, including helping plan and staff the orientation program.
  • Register freshman students for their first semester of coursework s includes a substantial time commitment during Freshman Orientation in June and July.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of the AARC mission, the Division of Enrollment Management, and the university.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree and at least one year of successful experience working in an education setting(s) providing direct service and assistance to students.

The selected candidate must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills; strong organizational skills; ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively; knowledge of student development models and current academic advising practices; experience working with diverse student populations, and demonstrated cultural competence; knowledge of FERPA; ability to use good judgment, exercise discretion, and maintain confidentiality; proven success in providing high quality customer service, especially listening and problem solving;

proficiency in Microsoft Office and other common technology platforms.

Salary and Benefits

Salary at $55,000 annually and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
