Essential Job Functions

This position is responsible for specialized clerical work at the beginning levels in the Civil Section (Constable Office) for Baltimore County District Court. It requires that all essential duties assigned be performed in an accurate and prompt manner. The position receives moderate supervision after the initial training period and orientation. While this position will have specific and measured assigned duties, the employee will be expected to perform.

  • Answer calls, emails and take messages for constables in the Towson/Catonsville/Essex location.
  • Review and accept envelopes in File and Serve, process new civil cases, print and send services to constables and all sheriff departments in the State of Md. Enter information in Odyssey.
  • Accepts and reviews rent cases and warrants, run mail, send tasks to Judges and process motions. Work the counter and answer phones.
  • Receive and process all landlord tenant filings that are filed in person and through File and Serve.
  • Review and process all other civil documents. Perform other essential functions as required.
  • Sort, file, and scan various documents and files in accordance within MDEC procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Substitutions

A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

General office practices, procedures, and equipment;
Alpha and numerical filing system;
Basic English and arithmetic;
Standard legal forms and documents used in the Maryland District Courts.

  • Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
  • Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
  • Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
