About Torrance Memorial Medical Center

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is a 401-bed community hospital serving the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It offers a broad range of inpatient and procedural care, including a busy Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory where RNs deliver critical support for diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiac Cath Lab provides expert peri-procedural nursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. The Cath Lab RN partners with cardiologists and the interdisciplinary team to promote patient safety, maintain sterile technique, and support optimal patient outcomes throughout the procedure continuum.

This role includes pre-procedure preparation, intra-procedure monitoring, and post-procedure recovery care for adult patients in a high-acuity cardiovascular environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients before, during, and after cath lab procedures
  • Prepare the procedural area with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment
  • Monitor patient vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, and ECG continuously during procedures
  • Assist with interventional procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, pacemaker insertion, and other cardiac interventions based on scope of practice
  • Apply and maintain aseptic technique and safety protocols throughout the procedure
  • Administer medications, contrast agents, and emergency drugs safely per physician orders and nursing scope
  • Educate patients and families on procedural expectations, post-procedure care, and discharge instructions
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR) accurately and timely
  • Collaborate with cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and support staff to ensure coordinated patient care
Required Qualifications
  • Active California RN license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • ACLS certification preferred (common in cardiac procedural settings)
  • Minimum 1–2 years of RN experience, preferably in:
    • Cardiac cath lab, interventional cardiology, ICU, PCU, telemetry, or cardiac step-down units
    • Experience with cardiac monitoring and hemodynamic assessments is strongly preferred
  • Strong critical thinking and procedural monitoring skills
Typical Clinical Environment

The Cath Lab at Torrance Memorial functions as a diagnostic and interventional cardiology unit, where RNs are expected to provide age-specific individualized care, manage physiologic data, and maintain readiness for rapid interventions during high-acuity procedures.

Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology
  • Proficient in cardiac rhythm interpretation and emergency response (e.g., ACLS protocols)
  • Able to troubleshoot equipment and respond to acute procedural changes
  • Excellent communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced procedure area
