Position: PROGRAM LEADER (AT-WILL)

Overview

The City of Torrance is seeking Program Leaders to staff upcoming programs. This is a recurrent, part-time, hourly, as needed position. Program Leaders support the Community Services Department in delivering programs and events.

Programs and Typical Duties
  • Adult Sports Program Leaders assist with supervision of facilities (Galaxy Sports Complex, Dee Hardison Sports Center, Roller Rink at Wilson Park) and may assist the Adult Sports Softball League.
  • Administrative Services – Program Leaders handle class registrations, phone inquiries, file and sort documents, assist customers with online registration, track Facility Booking/Reservations, and provide information about park amenities.
  • Hours
    :
    Hours vary; facilities open 7 days a week; shifts generally after 2:00 p.m. and end by 10:00 p.m.; earlier shifts available on weekends.
  • After School Club Program Leaders coordinate games, arts and crafts, sports, and recreation activities at specified elementary and middle schools in Torrance.

    Hours:

    Monday–Friday 2–6 p.m. during the TUSD school year (August–June).
  • Community Gardens Program Leaders act as liaison between gardeners and the Community Gardens Manager and help oversee 256 garden plots at Lago Seco Park and Columbia Park. Some outdoor work and some office time required.

    Hours:

    approximately 16 hours/week; days/hours may vary.
  • Cultural Services Division Program Leaders assist with logistics and implementation of visual/performing arts classes, special events, and public interfacing; duties include setting up equipment, cleaning studios, answering phones, and office support. Hours vary 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. (Mon–Fri) and 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (Sat).
  • Early Childhood Education Program Leaders assist the Program Specialist in the classroom to promote child development; duties include setup/cleanup, crafts preparation, and working under the Program Specialist.
  • Farmers' Market Program Leaders set up and tear down at the Torrance Certified Farmers’ Market; some heavy lifting may be required.

    Hours:

    Tuesdays and Saturdays, 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • Park Ranger Program Program Leaders patrol parks, assist park users and permit holders, respond to inquiries, and enforce park rules.

    Hours:

    approximately 30 hours/week June–September; 15 hours/week September–May; most weekends year-round 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., including holidays.
  • The ATTIC Teen Programs Program Leaders supervise and supervise high school participants at The ATTIC Teen Center; assist with coordination of recreation programs (events, sports, crafts, games, excursions) and The ATTIC Café duties (preparing meals, processing orders, cleaning workspace).

    Hours:

    Teen Center 3:00–7:00 p.m. weekdays;
    Café 2:30–6:00 p.m. August–June; weekends/holidays may be required.
  • Victor

    E. Benstead Plunge
    Program Leaders assist with aquatic programs and cashiering; maintain locker rooms. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Youth Sports Officials Program Leaders officiate and scorekeep for Flag Football and Basketball League games. Hours vary; majority on Saturdays; may be up to 8 hours on a Saturday.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical pathway: six months of recent, paid or volunteer part-time work experience related to recreation or community programs with public contact is desirable.

License and/or Certificates

Negative tuberculin test. Some positions may require: a valid California Class C Driver’s License; certification in Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR (desirable).
