Job Summary
We are recruiting for our Acute Medical Unit at Torbay Hospital. This fast‑paced unit receives a mix of directly referred medical patients and those referred from our emergency department. The aim is to provide same‑day emergency care, rapid diagnosis, and direct medical review to facilitate discharge that day or transfer to a short‑stay unit.
Main Duties- Participate in assessment of care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate care plans to promote high standards, compassion, and patient dignity.
- Work as a skilled member of the multi‑disciplinary team.
- Provide urgent care, promoting good inter‑departmental relationships.
- Ensure high standards of care in line with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures.
- Assist in evaluating and incorporating new nursing procedures, research, and initiatives into clinical practice.
- Store and administer prescribed drugs safely following legal and Trust requirements.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients’ problems, producing written care plans as required.
- Report, document, and evaluate accidents and unit incidents via Datix, notifying the manager and updating the health and safety register.
Our Acute Medical Unit handles high demand admissions and discharges. Referrals come from GP, paramedic crews, specialty teams, and A&E. Working on the unit is both exciting and challenging, and we collaborate closely with all multidisciplinary team members.

- Proven relevant experience at Band 5
- Evidence of continual professional development
- Safe and competent practitioner aware of own limitations and needs
- Experienced in giving IV medications
- IT skills including data entry and Microsoft Word
- Urgent care knowledge and experience
- Co‑ordinated previous team experience
- Interest in stepping up to co‑ordinate the shift
