We are looking for an experienced Consultant Histopathologist to join our team within the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
.

Our department is housed in a self‑contained unit opposite the outpatient department and includes separate histopathology, cytopathology and immunohistology laboratories, a secretarial office, 5 consultant offices, 1 senior MLSO office, and a tea‑room. It offers a modern work environment with state‑of‑the‑art microscopes, video capture, VDU displays, and networked PCs.

The mortuary is located on the ground floor of the main hospital block. It has been updated recently to increase storage capacity.

We have high‑throughput immunohistochemical staining capabilities with two Benchmark Ultra analysers, capable of processing up to 180 slides per day. Additional services include in situ hybridisation, immunofluorescence for skin biopsies, and molecular biological studies performed in our regional hubs.

The laboratory information system is currently Winpath (Clinisys) but will transition to EPIC/Beaker in December 2025.

• Provide comprehensive histopathology and cytopathology reporting, including work derived from bowel cancer programmes.
• Share equally in the provision of autopsy services, performing coroners' cases at the behest of the coroner and limiting hospital post‑mortem work.
• Participate in administrative duties of the department, acting as Head of Department/Budget Holder on a mutually compatible basis and applying for the clinical director post.
• Run clinico‑pathological meetings on a rota basis.
• Engage in continuing professional development in accordance with Royal College of Pathologists guidelines.
• Contribute to medical audit, clinical governance, and UKAS accreditation processes, participating in appraisal and revalidation requirements.
• Attend regional (Wessex and Southwest Histopathology) and national bowel cancer screening EQA schemes local internal QC schemes.
• Cover for colleagues during short absences.
• Take part in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and collaborate on research projects.
• Provide high‑quality consultant‑delivered care, offering clinical leadership and supervision of junior staff, ensuring rapid assessment, treatment and decision making.
• Advocate for patient safety, dignity and care, acting as a proactive contributor to the department’s clinical governance agenda.
• Maintain communication with local GPs and liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the department to resolve service issues.
• Support audit and quality assurance processes in line with trust policies.

We offer a supportive environment within Torbay Hospital, a medium‑sized district general hospital with a 10‑bed critical care unit, multiple theatres, and a strong network with regional trusts.

Consultant pathologists may apply for the Clinical Director of Pathology post, typically tenable for three years.
