The Opportunity:

Join our team as a Swim/Lifesaving Instructor! We're seeking part-time and full-time Swim Instructors to work 4-16 hours per week for part-time or 20-35 hours a week for full-time in the state-of-the-art pool within our Athletic and Wellness Centre.

Applicants can apply to either one, or both of the Swim Instructor positions based on availability:

  • Applicants applying for a Day Swim Instructor position must be available to work shifts between 7:00 a.m.

    - 5:00 p.m. from Monday-Friday.

  • Applicants applying for an Auxiliary Swim Instructor position must be available to work shifts on weekends and in the evenings.

  • Reporting into the Aquatic Leads, you'll be part of a motivated and certified aquatics team, ensuring the safety and quality of our programming. Shifts will vary on weekdays and weekends to support our curricular and auxiliary programs, and the contract will have the opportunity to renew based on performance and programming needs.

    Key Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the safety of all patrons using the Athletics and Wellness Centre’s swimming pools

  • Provides instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum

  • Plan, organize, and implement lesson plans and evaluations

  • Oversee the delivery of swimming lessons to ensure classes are following the established curriculum

  • Deliver aquatic programming to ensure lessons and special events are executed smoothly

  • Maintain direct contact with swimmers and communicate with them in an effective and age appropriate manner

  • Provide a high level of customer service to all participants and families, communicating effectively by providing information about the program and related policies and procedures

  • Act as the first responder in case of an emergency and provide First Aid as needed throughout the pool area

  • Alert the Deck Supervisor and respond to any emergency situations, following established protocols, then reporting all incidents and concerns to the Aquatic Leads

  • Enforce and ensure all pool policies, procedures, and safety regulations are adhered to

  • Monitor designated pool areas and is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck, changing rooms and shower facilities (e.g. picking up equipment and safely storing it, picking up towels and debris etc.)

  • Administrative tasks to support staff and Physical Education faculty

  • Performs maintenance and related work to ensure the pool deck and equipment are clean and well-maintained for use, as required

  • Complete mandatory staff training before every Fall (October-December), Winter (January-March), Spring (April-June) session

  • Candidate Profile:

  • Active Standard First Aid & CPR ‘C’ with AED (issued from Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St John’s Ambulance, or Canadian Ski Patrol)

  • Lifesaving Society Swim/Lifesaving Instructor Certification is required

  • National Lifeguard certification is an preferred

  • Must possess knowledge of the rules and regulation governing safety in an indoor pool facility

  • Knowledge and practice of Lifesaving, Lifeguarding, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid

  • Enjoy working with children and youth

  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of service situations in a busy aquatic facility

  • Capable of responding to and making decisions in an emergency situation

  • Previous experience as a Lifeguard and/or experience instructing the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program, or other Swim Program is an asset;

  • Additional Lifesaving Society’s certification such as Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Coach-Level 1, and Pool Operator-Level 1 is an asset.

  • Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, and weekends

  • Required to move, lift, carry, pull and place objects weighing less than or equal to 40 pounds without assistance

  • Stand, sit or walk for an extended period of time

  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting and pulling

  • Move on sloping, uneven or slippery surfaces

  • Target Hiring Range: $22.87 Hourly
