Senior Software Engineer – Backend, Buyer Experience Platform

Location: Hybrid 1-2 days in our Toronto office

About

The Role

The Buyer Experience Platform team at eBay builds the backend systems that power critical buyer journeys, including search, discovery, checkout, trust, and post‑purchase experiences. You will be part of a team responsible for building out the newest eBay experience — live shopping platform: eBay Live. Live shopping naturally fits into the eBay ethos — focused largely on unique items, collectibles and fashion, and enabling direct communication between buyers and sellers.

This is a relatively new trend in the US and Europe, growing quickly, and is already broadly established in APAC. We are looking to hire a passionate, collaborative and motivated Backend Software Engineer, who will help us develop and evolve eBay Live to be a market leader in live shopping and become a key part of the global eBay platform.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and operate scalable backend services that support high‑traffic, buyer‑facing applications used by millions of customers globally. This role fits an experienced backend engineer who can build service‑ and feature‑level solutions and deliver results with little mentorship. They also contribute meaningfully to technical decisions within the team and immediate domain.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the design, development, and delivery of backend services and features, initial design through production deployment and ongoing support
  • Design and maintain scalable, high‑availability distributed systems that support buyer‑facing experiences
  • Contribute to technical design and architectural discussions, influencing decisions within the team and immediate problem space while surfacing risks and trade‑offs
  • Build backend services using Java (primary) and additional object‑oriented languages such as Python, Go, or C++
  • Develop and operate services in cloud environments (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure acceptable)
  • Partner closely with product managers, designers, and engineering peers to deliver high‑quality, inclusive solutions
  • Identify, solve, and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability issues in production systems
  • Apply modern engineering guidelines including shift‑left testing, CI/CD, automation, and observability, while maintaining strong operational ownership
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience in practice
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience building and supporting production systems
  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience with additional object‑oriented languages such as Python, Go, or C++
  • Hands‑on experience with distributed systems, microservices, and systems built around APIs
  • Experience working in cloud‑native environments such as GCP, AWS, or Azure
  • Solid understanding of system design, data modeling, service reliability, and performance optimization
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks independently, raise risks appropriately, and maintain consistent delivery without requiring Staff‑level platform authority
  • Clear, inclusive communication skills and a collaborative attitude focused on progress
