Position: LEADHAND ARBORIST

Responsibilities

:
  • Directs staff and performs work involved in the care and culture of trees.
  • Receives, tracks and documents work orders and status of work.
  • Organizes assigned work such that it is completed in an efficient and expeditious manner. This includes determining the necessary materials and equipment for various sized crews. Notifies Foreperson and/or Supervisor of deficiencies (e.g. supply shortages, equipment replacements requirement).
  • Completes tailboard and ensures work plan is understood by everyone on site.
  • Completes and ensures Daily Work Activity Report/Log are completed both manually and/or electronically (Maximo), pre and post trip inspections are completed and any deficiencies are reported to their supervisor
  • Complies with and enforces all legislation and City policies and practices, reporting deficiencies and providing on the job instruction, when necessary, regarding working procedures, equipment operation and Health & Safety standards as well as reporting any work related deficiencies and or incidents.
  • Provides training to staff on all aspects of the operation and provides feedback on performance.
  • Completes work reports and forms as required including detailed equipment inspections, daily circle checks on multiple vehicles and records work completion information.
  • Completes tree inspections and makes tree maintenance recommendations.
  • Ensures that appropriate action is taken to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies in accordance with divisional policies and procedures.
  • Plants/transplants trees by both mechanical and manual methods.
  • Works at various heights, including work in proximity to energized conductors up to 27,600 volts, while responding to tree failures and in the performance of tree maintenance and tree removal in all weather conditions, using aerial devices and manual climbing; using approved climbing and safety equipment and techniques.
  • Responds to after hour tree failures.
  • Assists those working at heights in the handling of ropes and other mechanical devices and perform the duties of a spotter.
  • Drives/operates/inspects and ensures proper maintenance of various equipment, including but not limited to: dump truck, aerial tower, crane truck (under 7200 kg), chipper, sprayer, stump cutter, tractor/loader, backhoe, chain saws, motorized pole saw and other associated equipment and hand tools.
  • Handles/loads/chips brush and wood.
  • Performs tree pit/container maintenance in areas with both high pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
  • Liaises with the public to address work site and tree maintenance issues and ensures good customer service when addressing the public.
  • Requests hold-offs with Toronto Hydro.
  • Establishes traffic control measures for work sites in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Communicates with parking enforcement to have cars moved from work zones as required.
  • Reviews and interprets online mapping systems for the purpose of verifying tree ownership and locating trees to be worked upon.
  • Attends all training provided by the City related to the discharge of job duties.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Your resume must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Minimum 444A/B Arborist/Utility Arborist Designation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive experience in all types of arboricultural work including pruning, removal, stumping and newly planted tree maintenance.
  • Experience leading, training and supervising staff engaged in pruning and removal of trees.
  • Experience climbing trees and operating aerial devices.
  • Experience in the care and safe operation of chain saws, motorized pole saws, brush chippers, knuckle boom (under 7200 kg), stump grinders, aerial devices, associated vehicles, and equipment and hand tools.
  • Must possess Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (formally known as Electrical Utilities Safety Association of Ontario) certificate for Safety in Line Clearing Operations and Toronto Hydro Core Certificate or equivalent
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for and be able to obtain a City’s Operator's Permit.
