OverviewAs a member of the military, Air Weapons Systems Technicians maintain aircraft air weapons systems. They also perform explosives storage and handling, and provide Explosive Ordnance Disposal duties for the Air Force.
Their primary responsibilities include:
- Testing, inspecting, and repairing Air Weapons Systems
- Performing quality assurance checks
- Preparing and maintaining aircraft forms and statistical data
- Performing aircraft handling tasks such as parking, towing, marshalling, starting, refueling, cleaning, de-icing, loading/unloading weapons, and operating weapons systems
- Operating aircraft support equipment
Technicians are employed mainly at air bases in aircraft maintenance organizations, maintenance hangars, shop environments, and on flight lines. They may also perform duties onboard ships at sea or at deployed airfields, and some responsibilities may involve airborne aircraft. Employment can vary from Canadian Armed Forces bases in Canada, including the Arctic, to locations worldwide in response to international commitments.
If you join the Regular Force, after training, you'll be assigned to your first base and may move locations throughout your career. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you'll serve part-time at a local Reserve unit, typically working one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.
Entry requirements- No prior work experience or specific skills required; recruiters can assist in assessing suitability.
- Minimum education:
Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 General Math or equivalent. Foreign education may be accepted.
The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, focusing on core skills and physical fitness.
Followed by approximately 32 weeks at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering in Borden, Ontario, covering aircraft and AMSE records, flight line duties, maintenance of weapons systems, explosives management, and disposal of surplus ammunition.
Opportunities for specialized and advanced training include courses in munitions disposal, missile maintenance, instructional techniques, and leadership, among others.
Part-time optionsAvailable for the Primary Reserve at various locations across Canada, involving part-time service typically up to 12 days per month, with pay at 92.8% of Regular Force rates, benefits, and pension eligibility.
