How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Assistant Environmental Technician is responsible for project support, inclusive of project coordination support, on ecological restoration and management projects. Specifically, the Assistant Environmental Technician will work with the team on terrestrial natural cover projects, including meadow restoration and invasive plant management including herbicide application. The position will have a high emphasis on implementation planning including creating maps using GIS software, securing permits, report writing, assisting with procurements as well as contractor oversight.

Major

Responsibilities:
  • Assists with the coordination of ecological restoration and management projects and programs including development of restoration plans including invasive species management plans, and meadow restoration plans
  • Assists with the coordination of restoration site assessments and preparation of technical reports in support of project communications and deliverables
  • Provides technical support in the planning, map development and reporting for restoration projects
  • Supports the coordination of daily project logistics, including resource scheduling, external contractors, field staff, vehicles, and equipment
  • Assists with contractor oversight to verify compliance with herbicide application following best management practices (as a licensed pesticide applicator)
  • Leads daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning when on site as required
  • Provides administrative support on project start up, development and close out
  • Obtains locates, permits, and internal and external approvals as required

    Prepares and provides status updates, project status and other relevant reports to the project team as well as relevant project stakeholders
  • Responsible for file management of documents and records (in both paper and electronic file formats)
  • Incumbents may also be assigned other duties
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
  • College diploma in Environmental Sciences, Geomatics, Restoration Ecology or a related field
  • Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license
  • Knowledge of pesticide legislation and invasive species best management practices and comfortable working with herbicides
Experience
  • 1+ years of experience related to major tasks
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
  • Able to comprehend documentation that is technical or scientific in nature, skilled in writing technical reports or manuals
  • Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines
