Position: FIELD OPERATOR WEST NILE VIRUS VECTOR BORNE DISEASES
Responsibilities
:
Reporting to the Manager, Healthy Environments, the Field Operator - West Nile Virus / Vector Borne Disease will carry out field and analytical work in support of the monitoring program.
Prepares CDC light traps and coolers for service provider useConducts quality assurance checks of the CDC light traps set by the service providerCleans all laboratory equipment manually as requiredConducts quality assurance of catch basin treatment by the applicatorConducts surveys of Toronto Parks to determine the extent and production of mosquito breeding grounds (where females lay eggs, larvae and pupae develop and adults emerge)Conducts WNV standing water investigations in response to complaints on public property.Assists Public Health Inspectors (PHI) with larvae identification for standing water complaints on private propertyReviews weekly mosquito surveillance information to determine where environmental scans are requiredReviews weekly lab reports to analyze data and identify trends in relation to West Nile Virus riskReviews, organizes and files reports including weekly mosquito surveillance reports, weekly lab reports, referrals for WNV human cases and referrals for tick-borne disease human casesConducts environmental scans and enters results into Toronto Healthy Environments Information System (THEIS)Monitors surface water sites for mosquito larvae and makes referrals to contract service provider for larviciding of the siteLiaises with external groups as directed (e.g., Parks, Forestry and Recreation (PFR) or pest control companies relevant to reducing mosquito breeding site)Records physical information and Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates GPS handheld units at each surface water siteSamples surface water for mosquito larval and inputs information into THEISIdentifies different species of larvae or at least to genera using Mosquito identification guideProvides and carries out speaking engagements for community and businesses as directedConducts tick dragging as requiredIdentifies ticks collected and inputs data into THEISAssist PHI with passive tick identificationAssists in implementation of Vector Borne Diseases operational planParticipates in media events as requiredKey
Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
Post-secondary education in Environmental Sciences (Biology, Chemistry) or approved equivalent of education and experience. Preference will be given to applicants with training and proficiency in bacteriology and vector borne diseases.Experience in mosquito identification and testing; and tick dragging, including tick identification.Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Possession of a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "G" and access to a vehicle.
