The Invasive Species Field Staff, Restoration & Infrastructure participate in the implementation of invasive species management projects within TRCA’s jurisdiction through manual or mechanical plant removal, herbicide application, and monitoring. This position plays an integral role in the on-ground implementation of ecological restoration and ecosystem enhancement through the management of invasive species. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position.
The role is responsible for assisting Crew Leads in completing invasive species activities including site preparation, manual removal, monitoring, and herbicide application. Staff will learn relevant skills, techniques, and best management practices for invasive species management, while actively participating in the safe operation and maintenance of a range of tools and equipment including hand tools, powered brush cutters, and backpack sprayers.
This role also requires knowledge of pesticide legislation and invasive species best management practices, demonstrated knowledge of native and invasive plants with strong plant identification skills, and the ability and aptitude to work outdoors in adverse conditions.
Major Responsibilities- Participates in the implementation of invasive species management and projects within TRCA’s jurisdiction
- Participates in application of appropriate herbicides following best management practices under supervision by a licensed pesticide applicator
- Collects and inputs field data according to project scope
- Assists with the transportation of materials to and from sites as required
- Directs the public to project notice signage and possibly providing contact information for additional information and inquiries, referring detailed questions and complaints to supervisor
- Participates in the daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning
- Operates appropriate machinery and equipment required to execute work duties related to specific project/program area
- Assists with maintenance of equipment and vehicles, performs circle and other health and safety checks. Reports potential maintenance requirements to supervisor
- Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field
- Valid Class G2 Driver’s License
- Familiar with basic equipment and power tools
- Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy
- Demonstrated knowledge of native and invasive plants and plant identification skills
- Ability and aptitude to work outdoors and in adverse conditions
- Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issues
- Proficiency in MS Office for general office communications, ESRI Arc Map and Field Maps is an asset
