* * This position is required to work in person at the RPF Operations Centre, 3330 Harvester Road, Burlington. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
** Position Overview
** Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, Gardener/Landscapers are responsible for preparing and maintaining horticultural displays in parks as well as general parks maintenance activities throughout the City of Burlington.
** Responsibilities
* * The Gardener/Landscaper will provide a variety of services, such as:
* Lead and train crew members on the safe operation of equipment, tools and safe work procedures maintaining various horticultural displays
* Prepare, install, maintain and remove plantings; including watering, amendments, fertilizing, weeding and pruning
* Operating handheld equipment and hand tools related to grass cutting, sports field maintenance and general park maintenance activities.
* Perform minor adjustments, day-to-day and routine maintenance on equipment and tools used for horticultural and park maintenance tasks.
* Picking litter and emptying garbage receptacles from parks, playgrounds, parking lots, and roadsides etc.
* Opening, closing, inspecting, cleaning and disinfecting public washroom facilities
* Participating in loose leaf and winter control operations.
* Completing administrative tasks in an accurate and timely manner; including daily activity sheets, training documentation and other required paperwork.
* Complying with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures.
* Performing other duties as assigned
** Requirements
* * The successful candidate should possess good judgment, problem solving and customer service skills. They will have experience related to the above-noted duties normally acquired through the completion of a 2-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in Horticulture, or a closely related field of study along with 1 – 2 years of relevant gardening/ landscaping experience. Shift work will be required depending on time of year.
A valid DZ driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire). Applicants without a DZ license must have a valid Class G licence and be willing to obtain a Class DZ license and must have a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour.
