Registered Nurse Ambulatory Care Centre
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality nursing care to medical and surgical patients within a fast-paced ambulatory clinic environment characterized by high patient turnover. The RN will function primarily as the lead nurse supporting the Micrographic Surgery and Skin Oncology (Mohs) Clinic and may provide support to other outpatient clinics within the ACC as required. This role demands strong clinical judgment, advanced technical skill, and the ability to manage both the physical and cognitive demands of a busy procedural environment.
The RN plays an integral role in patient preparation, intraoperative assistance, postoperative care, and overall clinic flow. Collaboration with physicians and the interprofessional team is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care delivery. The RN is also expected to actively engage in ongoing professional development, teaching, and mentorship activities.
- Perform comprehensive preoperative and postoperative patient assessments.
- Complete medication reconciliation and manage overall perioperative care planning.
- Function as a primary surgical assistant to the physician, including:
- Careful tissue retraction using skin hooks as directed.
- Dabbing and point pressure for hemostasis.
- Administration of electrocautery for hemostasis.
- Inject local anesthetic as required.
- Apply and manage intraoperative and postoperative dressings.
- Provide advanced wound management, including complex pressure dressings following tumor extirpation and skin graft procedures (e.g., medial canthus, ear, conchal bowl, scalp).
- Apply lower extremity compression and pressure dressings.
- Perform suture removal from complex and sensitive anatomical sites (e.g., medial/lateral canthus, face, ear, scalp) with appropriate surgical site assessment.
- Provide detailed pre-procedure education, including individual and group teaching.
- Deliver comprehensive postoperative education regarding wound care, healing expectations, and sun/skin protection.
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries and provide clinical guidance, including management of post-procedure concerns and complications.
- Conduct health history intake interviews (telephone and in-person).
- Maintain a patient-centered approach that prioritizes safety, dignity, and overall patient experience.
- Prepare procedure trays using aseptic technique.
- Manage patient flow, assist with triage, and facilitate efficient room turnover.
- Stock and restock procedure rooms and ensure adequate medical supply inventory.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing colleagues, and healthcare aides to optimize clinic workflow, tray preparation, and operational efficiency.
- Participate in orientation, preceptorship, and teaching of medical and nursing students.
- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing education and professional development.

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized program.
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
- Recent dermatology experience required, including postoperative assessment.
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience as a primary surgical assistant in a procedural setting.
- Experience administering electrocautery/electrofulguration for hemostasis.
- Experience injecting local anesthetic.
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience managing complex wound care and advanced dressings (advanced wound care course preferred).
- Experience with Mohs procedures preferred.
- Outpatient/ambulatory care experience preferred, with demonstrated knowledge of clinic-based care models.
- Membership in the Dermatology Nursing Association is considered an asset.
- Strong physical assessment, critical thinking, and clinical judgment skills.
- Ability to independently manage complex and unpredictable patient situations.
