The Position

Reporting to the Manager of the Health Centre and the Lead Nurse, the School Nurse is responsible for supporting the physical and mental health of students. This role involves providing direct nursing care, including assessing students, administering medication, maintaining current medical documentation, and referring students for services. The work of health promotion with students is also a part of this role.

Specific Accountabilities
  • Provide nursing services at the Health Centre and on-campus (both Upper and Junior Schools) per the practices outlined by the College of Nurses.
  • Interested in a minimum of 4 shifts per month.
  • Assess students’ physical, social, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic nurse‑student relationships grounded in respect, dignity, professional boundaries, and culturally responsive, trauma‑informed care.
  • Refer to appropriate medical/support services when necessary (School Physician, Social Work, Emergency Services), and provide treatment and follow‑up care where required.
  • Communicate with faculty, parents, and students through conversation and the distribution of written information, within the limits of professional confidentiality.
  • Work with families of students with prevalent or serious medical conditions to ensure a safe school environment and school care plans.
  • Actively partner with the Manager of the Health Centre and report problems or concerns to them.
  • Identify, mitigate, and report potential risks to student health and safety, and participate in quality improvement initiatives and emergency preparedness planning.
  • Arrange appropriate transportation to medical appointments for boarding students; accompany students to outside support services when required (e.g., hospital).
  • Maintain accurate, timely, confidential, and comprehensive documentation in Havergal’s electronic medical records system in accordance with CNO’s Documentation Standard and applicable privacy legislation.
  • Liaise with the Public Health Department to maintain accurate immunization records for Boarding Students.
