Unity Health Toronto is hiring a permanent part-time (0.8 FTE) RN for the department of Laboratory Medicine to work a cross-site position. This position will be primarily based out of the St. Michael’s Hospital site with some responsibilities at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre site.
The RN works within a changing environment and in inter-professional teams to advocate for and promote wellness while ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and ethical nursing care. The RN shares their knowledge and expertise with others and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice excellence. The RN continually enhances their practice and competencies through ongoing learning, education, experience and reflective practice.
The RN acts as a liaison within the hospital environment between the clinical and laboratory staff and relevant stakeholders on matters pertaining to transfusion-related activities. In this unique role the RN provides leadership in the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of a patient-centered transfusion safety program. In addition, the nurse will be responsible for providing safe quality allografts to the health care team while managing the tissue product inventory.

- Provides health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategies.
- Documents observations, assessments and care provision.
- Contributes to discharge and transition planning.
- Refers patient to other agencies or services as needed.
- Serves as the primary resource for organizing and coordinating patient care activities.
- Establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative, therapeutic and inter-professional relationships.
- Coordinates and communicates patient care activities for a safe and seamless transition and appropriate transfer of accountability.
- Participates in hospital committees and other groups.

- Must have Current General Class (Practicing) Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Must have current CPR or BLS Certification.
- Minimum of five years of current clinical experience with a demonstrated understanding of clinical information related to blood components, blood products, and transfusion practices.
- Must be familiar with the use of infusion pumps, blood warming devices and rapid infusers.
- Certification in tissue banking preferred.
- Must be familiar with federal and provincial requirements for transfusion practice and tissue banking.
