Registered Practical Nurse (Surgery - Inpatient Surgery)
Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs work within the scope of their knowledge, skill, and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting, and the patient's preferences.
The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence; care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice and effective communication in partnership with patients, families, and other health care providers.
- Registered Practical Nursing Diploma with current certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BLS certification required.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate (for RPN) required.
- Completion of physical assessment course or willingness to complete within 6 months of obtaining the position.
- 2 years surgical experience (within the last 3 years) required.
- Demonstrated ability in IV initiation and venopuncture preferred.
- Knowledge of PCA and pain management an asset.
- Knowledge of current techniques in wound‑care an asset.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles required.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
- Demonstrated excellence in patient‑focused care.
- Excellent organizational, communication, observational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting.
- Motivated to pursue educational goals.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Service (skills & abilities considered).
