Board of Directors - General Director (Volunteer)
This is a volunteer position with no financial compensation.
About The Toronto Local Charity
The Toronto Local Charity (TLC) empowers young people ages 16-29 in the Greater Toronto Area to break the cycle of poverty through our Success Accelerator programs. We provide life skills training, mental health and wellness support, leadership development, and enhanced access to technology – delivered through a trauma-informed, dignity-focused approach that positions youth as having agency in their own transformation.
Our Distinctive Approach:
We focus on mindset transformation rather than traditional service delivery, helping young people examine their relationship with challenges and shift how they see themselves and their potential. Because we know that no one heals alone.
Where We Are Now: TLC is at an exciting inflection point. Over the past year, we built strong systems, processes, and infrastructure that have enabled us to serve 185+ youth with significantly less funding than the previous year. We’re now ready to scale. With the foundation in place, our limiting factor is capacity—we need passionate, committed board members to help us leverage this infrastructure to expand our impact across the GTA.
Why We Need You:
We’re recruiting 2-3 General Directors to join our Board. As a small but mighty team of 3-4 active board members, we need additional capacity to share the work of governance, fundraising, and strategic leadership. This is a hands-on board where members actively take ownership of initiatives between meetings and drive them to completion. We’re looking for individuals who bring one or more of these priority skills:
Priority Skills & Expertise:
- Fundraising
- Board Governance & Risk Management
- Communications & Community Engagement
- Strong Project Management & Execution
Fundraising priorities include grant writing and foundation relations; major donor cultivation and stewardship; corporate sponsorship development; individual donor campaigns and recurring giving programs; fundraising strategy and campaign planning. Governance priorities include nonprofit governance best practices, fiduciary oversight, risk assessment, policy development and strategic planning. Communications priorities include strategic guidance for social media and digital campaigns, media relations, community partnership development, and brand storytelling.
Project management priorities include ownership of action items, strategic thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and results-oriented execution.
Position Overview:
General Directors serve as Board members with shared responsibility for governance, strategic planning, and fiduciary oversight. You’ll work with the Executive Director and fellow Board members to guide TLC toward its mission and vision.
Current Board Composition: 3-4 active members (expanding to 6-8 total)
Meeting Frequency:
Every 8 weeks
Term Length: 2-2.5 years
Reports to:
Board Chair
Key Responsibilities for All Board Members:
- Governance & Strategic Oversight: help set and refine TLC’s mission, vision, and values; monitor performance; review financial information; assess and mitigate risks; ensure lawful and ethical activities
- Active Participation & Ownership: attend board meetings, participate in sub-committees, take ownership of action items, communicate responsively, and contribute beyond ceremonial roles
- Ambassadorship & Network Building: advocate for TLC, expand stakeholder and partnership opportunities, represent TLC’s mission
- Based on Expertise: leverage fundraising, governance, communications, or project management skills to advance TLC’s priorities
