The General Manager is accountable for leading the Packaging business in Ontario, reporting to the Vice-President of the Packaging division.
With the support of the Vice-President, and augmented by a strong, profitable Packaging business in Quebec, the General Manager will drive the division’s performance, including financial health, operational efficiency, business development, culture and personnel leadership. Using a well-developed business acumen, ideally in folding cartons or a tangential business, this individual will own the P&L and work with the leadership teams to drive continuous improvement across manufacturing and sales functions to enhance productivity, profitability and customer satisfaction.
As the leader of the Toronto division, the General Manager will build a culture of performance, collaboration and innovation by energizing employees, building effective team-building to promote forward-thinking activities performance optimization. This role will ensure the business aligns with corporate objectives and guidelines, remains cooperative interaction with other Regions/Branches, while maintaining a fair level of independence. A strong focus will be placed on revenue growth, customer service & reliability, cost management and talent development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- P&L ownership for the Toronto Packaging division
- Execute strategic and operational plans aligned with corporate objectives
- Lead sales, customer service and operations and support HR and finance to ensure a cohesive operational unit
- Foster strong relationships with key clients, vendors, and industry partners to support business growth
- Drive process improvements to enhance quality, throughput, and cost efficiency to improve corporate performance
- Coordinate and confer with staff to resolve operating problems and difficulties, and authorize department operational procedures within corporate framework
- Identify and analyze information to give early warnings of potential problems and recommend corrective action
- Promote a culture of accountability, safety and continuous improvement throughout leadership, mentoring, and professional development to direct and indirect reports
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, quality, and corporate standards
- Identify risks and opportunities for business optimization and growth
- Drive talent management strategies to support succession planning and leadership development
- Support integration efforts related to acquisitions or system rollouts if applicable
- Collaborate across other divisions and departments to leverage scale and synergies
- Contribute to the division’s OPEX and CAPEX budgeting process
- Direct employees – assign work; correct and discipline; evaluate performance; recommend new hires; recommend pay increases, promotions, and discharges
- Set divisional performance objectives in line with strategic goals
- Approve pricing, contracts, and customer quotations within defined thresholds
- Propose and manage the annual budget and capital investment needs
- Make critical decisions regarding day-to-day operations and resource allocation
- Proven leadership in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, ideally in folding carton, printing, paper converting or label manufacturing
- Strong business acumen and results-oriented mindset
- Hands-on operational approach with deep understanding of workflows and efficiencies
- Superior communication and negotiation skills across organizational levels
- Comfortable in both shop floor and executive-level environments
- Highly organized with solid analytical, planning, and prioritization skills
- Confident decision-maker with a calm demeanor under pressure
- Strong focus on safety, people development, and customer satisfaction
- Ability to lead by example and build a high-performance culture
- 10+ years of senior management experience in manufacturing; folding carton, print label or paper converting preferred
- 5+ years of direct work experience in a sales or operations management capacity, preferably in the folding carton OR a related industry
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or similar degree an asset
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Power Point
- Strong financial literacy and demonstrated ability to develop, read and interpret financial documents, KPIs, budgets, forecasts, etc.
- Demonstrated success in growing revenue and improving profitability
- Experience in continuous improvement initiatives
- Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and project management skills
- Occasional travel within North America may be required
