Brown Consulting Group is supporting a client in the search for an accomplished insurance professional to join their leadership team as AVP, Corporate Underwriting.

Reporting to the CEO, the successful candidate will be an important member of the leadership team.

Their primary role will be to drive profitable growth and ensure strong underwriting  addition to having leadership responsibility for a team of underwriters, they would also champion their role through a series of efforts including portfolio analysis, product development, competitive pricing, underwriting quality and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Devise and evolve business requirements to facilitate analysis of the portfolio including new business, retention, segmentation, internal productivity and profitability.
  • Work collaboratively with analytics team to produce required reporting.
  • Analyze and report on results to leadership including recommendations for improved effectiveness or efficiency.

Product Development

  • Ensure continued evolution of core products to ensure they meet or exceed the needs of insured members.
  • Lead competitive intelligence efforts to understand the organization’s position relative to competitors.
  • Analyze current profitability to understand segmented experience of company performance and inform future pricing.
  • Conduct and/or commission competitive intelligence to validate pricing model and or identify improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with actuarial experts to ensure pricing model that effectively supports the company’s mandate.

Strong Underwriting Discipline

  • Develop and deliver policies and training materials to support the underwriting function and ensure consistent practises within the team.
  • Lead internal underwriting audit capability to ensure intended quality hurdles are achieved and improvement opportunities identified. Report on key metrics.
  • Act as a technical underwriting subject matter expert on organizational projects and initiatives as required.
  • Champion efficient and effective processes and technology that enable the underwriting process.
  • Ensure regulatory requirements and reporting commitments are maintained.

Positive Stakeholder Relations

  • Establish and maintain ongoing communication with key clients and stakeholders.
  • Working with the CEO, champion the organization within the insurance industry including with insurers and reinsurers.

    Identify and prioritize collaboration efforts for the purpose of growing member adoption and ensuring awareness and preservation of our client’s value to both insured members and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and present materials, representing the organization at industry related events.

Primary Relationships

  • Internal stakeholders including leaders responsible for underwriting, claims, operations (including technology and data and reporting), marketing and accounting.
  • External stakeholders including key clients, regulators, actuaries, insurers, reinsurers and legal counsel.

About you

As the AVP, Corporate Underwriting you are a seasoned leader.

As you will engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, you possess strong communication and collaboration skills.

You thrive in dynamic environments, can balance strategic priorities and are comfortable with hands-on execution.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • University/College degree or equivalent.
  • At least fifteen years of casualty/liability experience.
  • CIP or FCIP designation are preferred.
  • Proven track record of leadership of a team, including all facets of performance management; successful product development and pricing model management; identifying, devising, and executing quality assurance controls; devising and executing initiatives that drive financial goals of the organization including new business, retention, and profitability.
  • Organized, able to multi-task and prioritize a diverse portfolio of projects and tasks.
  • The ability to read and interpret data to inform and effectively make decisions.
  • Effective problem-solver with an ability to think both analytically and creatively to meet objectives and overcome challenges.
