Position
Purpose:
The Temporary Custodian, Grade 1 is responsible, under close supervision, to perform custodial duties as required to ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of all areas of the buildings and washrooms. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Role Responsibilities:
- Under close supervision ensures cleanliness of washrooms, buildings, and offices as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Cleans public side of glass on animal exhibits.
- Assists in the moving of furniture or other items as required.
- Assists in the set up and take down of tables and chairs required for meetings or other events.
- Cleans furniture upholstery or carpeting as required.
- Ensures that all Custodial equipment, tools, machinery and supplies are properly stored and/or maintained.
- Makes minor repairs to equipment or fixtures used or maintained by the Custodial staff.
- Use large cleaning equipment such as buffing machines.
- May be required to work in any other area of the Zoo.
- Follow all policies and branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training as required.
Skills:
- Must have 1 year of proven experience in janitorial or caretaking work.
- Must have knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment and the acceptable usage of same.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
- Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
- Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
- Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
