Vacation: 10 days in first year; 3 weeks thereafter
Stanley Knowles Housing Cooperative is a 12 storey residential community located near Yonge & Eglinton. We are an independent living building with many seniors, families, and long term members. We are seeking a full time Custodian who takes pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
Position OverviewThe Custodian is responsible for the daily cleaning and upkeep of common areas, exterior grounds, and shared facilities. The role also includes basic cleaning related maintenance and respectful interaction with members. This position reports to the Property Manager and works closely with staff and contractors. Prior custodial experience is helpful but not required — training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities- Sweep, mop, and vacuum hallways, stairwells, and lobby floors.
- Wipe down high touch surfaces including railings, door handles, and mailroom counters.
- Clean laundry rooms: lint traps, floors, surfaces.
- Maintain elevator cleanliness (walls, floors, tracks).
- Empty garbage and recycling bins in common areas.
- Rotate bins for pickup and return them afterwards.
- Monitor recycling contamination and keep waste rooms tidy.
- Clean spills or leaks around bins.
- Disinfect toilets, sinks, counters, and fixtures.
- Restock supplies such as soap and paper products.
- Clean floors and remove garbage.
- Ensure rooms are ready for bookings or member use.
- Sweep entrances and walkways; remove litter from grounds.
- Clear snow and apply salt to walkways and steps.
- Clean ground level exterior windows as needed.
- Respond to spills, leaks, odours, and sanitation issues promptly.
- Remove debris from minor incidents (e.g., dropped groceries, pet accidents).
- Replace burnt out bulbs in common areas.
- Report leaks, damage, or safety hazards to management immediately.
- Maintain and organize cleaning equipment.
- Monitor supply levels and request restocking when needed.
- Clean vacated units to prepare them for trades or painting.
- Remove minor debris.
- Clean common areas after large moves.
- Respond politely and professionally to cleanliness concerns.
- Explain cleaning schedules when asked.
- Maintain boundaries, privacy, and professionalism at all times.
- Prior custodial experience not required — willingness to learn is essential.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Reliability, initiative, and strong attention to cleanliness.
- Comfortable interacting with residents in a respectful, friendly manner.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, bend, and perform repetitive movement.
- This position is covered under the CLAC bargaining unit.
- Standard weekday schedule; occasional flexibility may be required for emergencies or special events.
