Role and Location

The Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre (BTRC) Biobank supports high-impact pediatric brain tumour research through the ethical collection, processing, storage, and distribution of patient specimens and associated study data. The [Job Title] will provide hands-on operational support across biobank workflows, with a strong focus on meticulous database recordkeeping, adherence to SOPs, and professional, patient-centred communication. This role is 100% in-person, 5 days per week (Monday-Friday) at Sick Kids in Toronto.

Remote or hybrid work is not available. Applicants must be prepared to work on-site full-time as a condition of employment.

What You ll Do
  • Support day-to-day biobank operations including receipt, processing, aliquoting, labeling, and storage of specimens (e.g., blood and tissue) following established SOPs and timelines.
  • Perform accurate specimen accessioning and inventory management, including tracking locations, transfers, and distributions to investigators.
  • Maintain high-integrity database records: timely data entry, verification, discrepancy resolution, and routine quality checks/audits to ensure traceable sample histories and excellent downstream usability.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation (e.g., logs, worksheets, chain-of-custody-style tracking) to support compliance and internal quality standards.
  • Coordinate with clinical and research teams to ensure smooth specimen flow and clear communication around requirements, timing, and priorities.
  • Interact with patients and families in clinic settings as required (e.g., supporting study participation workflows), communicating in a calm, approachable, and professional manner.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement: identify process gaps, suggest solutions, and implement refinements under guidance.
Qualifications
  • Minimum

    B.Sc. or equivalent post-secondary education in a science/health-related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
  • Experience in biobanking, clinical research operations, specimen handling, or laboratory workflows a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with research databases (e.g., REDCap/LIMS/File Maker or similar), data QC practices, and SOP-driven environments an asset.
  • Experience working in a patient-facing healthcare or clinical setting an asset.
  • Demonstrated strengths in organization, attention to detail, and the ability to follow standards and procedures consistently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including comfort engaging with clinical teams and (where applicable) patients/families.
  • Confidence with data entry and recordkeeping systems (e.g., Excel and/or research/biobank databases); commitment to accurate documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize time-sensitive work, and maintain reliability in a busy environment.
  • Coachability: openness to feedback, willingness to learn, and steady skill-building over time.
  • A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.
Employment Type

Full-time (35 hours/week), 1-year contract (in-person) with modified benefits.
