Position Summary
Registered Orthopaedic Technologist, Orthopaedic & Plastic Clinic:
Your goal in this position is to perform and/or assist with Orthopaedic & Plastics Centre activities in the care of orthopaedic patients and functions under the direction of a physician. You have superior verbal and written communication skills, and able to interpret and follow medical directions. You are able to work effectively with minimal supervision. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation.

This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level, you will
  • Perform work assignments under the direction of a physician and within the limits of Hospital and nursing policies
  • Perform assignments of applying trimming, beveling, windowing and removing casts; apply and remove bandages and splints; assist physicians with traction and casts in the Operating Room, on units and in the Emergency Department; assist physicians with procedures in the Orthopaedic & Plastics Centre, assist units with traction problems if required
  • Maintain an adequate supply of all equipment and supplies used in the Orthopaedic & Plastics Centre
  • Ensure equipment and supplies are in safe working order, and reports need for repair and replacement
  • Record pertinent information on appropriate grounds
  • Provide education related to orthopedic treatments and discharge instructions/ follow-up care to patients and families (e.g. cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use, etc).
  • Participate in the explanation to staff, nursing students, and students of other disciplines of application and care of orthopaedic appliances
  • Assist in the transport of patients as required
  • Maintain procedural competence by attending in-service and physicians’ rounds; read and generally keep updated with current trends in orthopaedics
  • Ensure economical use of supplies
  • Assist in technical advice and care to clinic and other units/departments on orthopaedic and plastic devices/equipment including wound care
  • Refer to Hospital and nursing policy and procedures manuals for clarification if in doubt
  • Observe the work area, equipment and supplies for hazardous conditions and maintain workspace as per infection prevention and control standards
  • Be an active participant in quality improvement initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Qualifications
  • Orthopaedic Technologist Diploma/Certificate
  • Member of Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT), Minimum 1 to 2 years preferred
  • Current BCLS
  • Bilingualism in French/ English an asset
