Position: TECHNICAL TRAINEE
Responsibilities
:
Reports to the Manager, Healthy Environments and assists the Public Health Inspectors in ensuring compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and related provincial acts, regulations and municipal by-lawsAssists in the inspection of licensed premises, other facilities and premises for compliance with Municipal, Provincial and Federal legislation; investigates complaints, interprets results and takes appropriate actionDuring the Communicable Disease Control program rotation, reports to the Manager, Control of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control and assists the Public Health Inspectors or Public Health Nurses in responding to medium/high risk diseases ensuring compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and related provincial acts, regulations and municipal by-laws in CID/IC program specific issuesCollects samples and specimens and forwards to laboratory for analysisTests, investigates and examines any damaged or unsound foodstuff and recommends that it be condemned as appropriate (in consultation with the area Public Health Inspector)Investigates environmental complaints and makes recommendations as appropriateAdvises residents and property owners on non-compliance and gives instructions regarding corrective measuresAssists in the preparation of summonses and legal documentsParticipates in comprehensive food quality programs including special eventsCompletes pool inspections (except opening/initial inspection/or closure)Conducts Day Nursery inspectionsConducts Personal Services Setting inspectionsCompletes food safety disclosure inspections (high, medium and low risk premises)Responds to food related complaints as appropriateResponds to reports of low-risk enteric diseasesInvestigates and takes appropriate action in regard to tobacco, Municipal Code and Tobacco Control Act, in consultation with the appropriate inspectorKey
Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
Completion of or in the graduating year of the Bachelor of Applied Science, School of Occupational and Public Health, Toronto Metropolitan University or a comparable degree in a program of instruction approved by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.Eligibility to sit for the next scheduled CIPHI Board of Certification Examination.Possession of a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and access to a vehicle.You must also have:
Knowledge of all statutes and Municipal By-Laws respecting food, environmental health, communicable diseases and basic epidemiology.Ability to organize field work and exercise initiative and independent judgement.Ability to establish and maintain good relations with the public and other staff.Ability to work in teams.Good written and verbal/oral communication skills.
