Key Responsibilities
  • Lead strategies to enable lending for underrepresented entrepreneurs, nonprofits, co‑ops, and community organizations, with a focus on affordable housing, social enterprise, social services, and childcare sectors.
  • Build and manage partnerships with government, philanthropic, and private organizations to secure capital and expand access to flexible financing.
  • Oversee all aspects of portfolio management, including pipeline development, revenue growth, and market trend analysis in the nonprofit and affordable housing sectors.
  • Build and manage a national engagement approach focused on providing access to capital for underserved groups and community organizations.
  • Prepare proposals, presentations, and communications for prospective investors and stakeholders.
  • Develop systems for reporting and relationship management to monitor and report on loans and investments.
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities to grow and retain relationships that contribute positively to Alterna.
  • Deliver tailored financial solutions to new and existing clients, either directly or through referrals to other service providers. Cross‑sell or refer products and services to meet member/client needs and ensure satisfaction.
Financial Solutions, Consulting & Credit Evaluation
  • Design and refine financial models, oversee program evaluation and metrics, and provide financial consulting to community organizations, positioning Alterna’s products and services to meet mutual goals.
  • Evaluate and recommend credit facilities, including commercial lines of credit, mortgages, and other loan applications, with a focus on the social finance sector.
Compliance, Service Delivery & Financial Literacy
  • Promote and negotiate community/business banking services, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and policies.
  • Deliver exceptional service to members and community organizations, demonstrating creativity, resourcefulness, and a solution‑oriented approach.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry trends, competitor strategies, and market conditions affecting our members and their communities.
  • Represent Alterna and the Community Impact Department at community events and initiatives. Provide subject matter expertise and support to enhance community impact lending and investing.
  • Ensure lending activities and investment partnerships adhere to Alterna’s Commercial Risk Appetite Framework, including proactive risk identification, due diligence, credit assessment, and collaboration with Risk, Compliance, and Legal to monitor portfolio performance and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop training tools and deliver financial literacy presentations in partnership with industry experts.
  • Work collaboratively with various lending teams to ensure deliverables are met within defined SLAs.
Flexibility
  • Attend evening meetings and events as needed; occasional travel required.
Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary education in Business, Nonprofit Administration, Humanities, Economics, Finance, Marketing/Communications, Fundraising, or a related field; university degree preferred.
  • Five to seven years’ progressive experience in lending within financial institutions or social finance organizations, including structuring, underwriting, and managing complex lending portfolios for affordable housing, social enterprises, or community projects.
  • Five years’ experience in affordable housing with a focus on financing solutions, flexible instruments, and large‑scale infrastructure projects (e.g., housing, childcare).
