Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.
As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.
The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.
What is the project?- A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
- Stations:
- One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
- Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
- Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).
Faster, more frequent, and reliable access to rapid transit with more than 227,500 people will live within a 10‑minute walk of an Ontario Line station.
- Improve the quality of life for commuters by reducing daily travel time.
- Reduce crowding on the existing Line 1 (Yonge‑University) subway.
- Up to 57,000 more jobs accessible by transit (in 45 minutes or less) for Toronto residents.
- Economic and community growth along the future transit line and thousands of job opportunities annually during construction.
- Reduction in traffic congestion, greenhouse gases, and fuel consumption by providing an alternative transportation option.
The TBM Erector Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) erector system used to lift, position, and install tunnel lining segments during excavation. This role requires precision, situational awareness, and the ability to work safely in confined underground environments. The operator works closely with the TBM crew to ensure efficient and safe tunnel advancement.
Key Responsibilities- Operate the TBM erector arm to lift, rotate, align, and install precast concrete segments according to engineering specifications.
- Coordinate with the TBM pilot/segment crane operator/ring builder to ensure smooth and accurate segment placement.
- Coordinate with Plant team and shift manager (shift superintendent, shift engineer or shift manager) to ensure accurate maintenance.
- Inspect the erector system before and after each shift to identify mechanical/electrical issues, wear, or safety concerns.
- Perform minor troubleshooting and assist maintenance teams with repairs or adjustments to the erector, hydraulic systems, and related TBM components.
- Monitor segment installation quality, ensuring correct bolt torque, gasket alignment, and ring geometry.
- Maintain clear communication with the TBM control room and ground crew using radios and hand signals.
- Follow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, and emergency response guidelines.
- Document daily activities, equipment performance, and any incidents or irregularities.
- Support general TBM operations as required, tunnel cleaning, support team during TBM stoppage or cavern crossing and (changing cutter disc, cleaning cutterhead), including mucking, conveyor adjustments, and housekeeping tasks.
- Experience operating heavy machinery, hydraulic equipment, or specialized tunneling equipment (TBM experience required).
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and underground construction processes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, ring build charts, and TBM operation manuals.
- Physically capable of working in confined spaces, rotating shifts, and underground environments.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a coordinated crew.
- Safety certifications (e.g., WHMIS, confined space, working at heights) considered an asset.
