Company Description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?
  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).
Job Description

The Site Geologist will play a key role in integrating geological expertise into large‑scale urban infrastructure construction. This position involves overseeing field operations such as secant pile drilling, open‑cut excavations, and NATM/SEM tunneling, while performing detailed geological mapping and bedrock assessments.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams including geotechnical engineers, designers, project managers, and contractors, this role will ensure geological conditions are accurately interpreted, risks are effectively managed, and project requirements are met with technical precision and operational efficiency.

The salary range for this position is $90,000 CAD - $110,000 CAD, plus additional benefits.

Key Responsibilities

Geological Oversight & Field Operations

  • Conduct geological face mapping during open‑cut and SEM excavations in soil and bedrock.
  • Apply structural geology expertise to evaluate joint features, ground conditions, and support classes (RMR, GSI, Q Barton value).
  • Identify and recommend appropriate rock support measures to ensure stability of the exposed rock face.
  • Support NATM/SEM tunneling activities, including participation in Permit‑to‑Tunnel meetings.

Technical Analysis, Instrumentation & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed logs of drilling, mapping, and geological observations.
  • Interpret geotechnical instrumentation data and contribute to Monitoring Action Team decisions.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports outlining geological risks, findings, and construction implications.

Design Review & Engineering Support

  • Collaborate with design teams to assess pile embedment, geological support classes, and excavation requirements.
  • Review SEM and SOE design reports, RFIs, Field Change Requests, and Non‑Conformance documentation.
  • Develop practical technical solutions to meet construction and geological constraints.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication

  • Work closely with Geotechnical Engineers, Project Managers, and Contractors to integrate geological considerations into construction planning.
  • Communicate geological findings, recommendations, and risks to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support coordination between field operations and design teams to ensure seamless project execution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Currently registered in Ontario as P.Geo.
  • P.Eng is a major asset.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing bedrock conditions in major infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Strong background in structural geology, with expertise in joint characterization and orientation analysis, and assessing the need of rock support installation (such as rock bolts, anchors, etc.).
  • Practical experience with open‑cut excavation and geotechnical classification systems (RMR, GSI, Q‑System).
  • Familiarity with Georgian Bay Formation geology or in similar Shale formations.
  • NATM/SEM tunneling experience considered a strong asset.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in high‑pressure, fast‑moving construction environments.
  • Proficiency with geological and geotechnical software (e.g., DIPS, UnWedge).
  • FEM experience is an advantage.
