Create the solutions that will enable a better tomorrow We are looking for a Leading Tunnel Specialist to join our global team of experts and work within a functional team that is responsible for performing engineering analysis, design, and technical reports and drawings for tunnels and various underground structures, such as deep shafts, cut-and-cover structures, and mined tunnels and caverns for metro transit, infrastructure, bridges or hydroelectric power projects.
In this role, you will be responsible for working with multidisciplinary teams and effectively managing and delivering your own tasks in terms of budget, quality, and timelines.
This position supports COWI’s role for multiple tunneling projects or metro stations such as the Immersed Tube Tunnel portion of the new Fraser River Tunnel Project (FRTP). The successful candidate will be the Coordination Lead for the geotechnical and seismic disciplines. In this role, the Coordination Lead will support the tunnel Project Manager in coordinating between the Client and the COWI geotechnical team.
The position will require solid project management and technical skills and will provide opportunities to grow and develop leadership skills.
Key responsibilities- Team Coordination:
Lead and coordinate the geotechnical and seismic team for COWI on FRTP and other assigned projects. - Stakeholder
Collaboration:
Work closely with clients, Owner’s Engineer, Design-Builder, Designer, and stakeholders throughout design development. - Project Management:
Serve as coordinating professional, overseeing geotechnical work, forecasting, scheduling, and budgeting. - Technical Skill:
Perform and review engineering analyses and designs, with emphasis on seismic analysis and soil-structure interaction for underground, retaining, foundation, and marine structures. - Ground Condition Assessment:
Interpret and classify geotechnical data to characterize ground conditions for structural design. - Deliverables & Quality:
Contribute to preparation, review, and approval of design deliverables including reports, memoranda, and construction drawings, ensuring quality standards. - Digital Delivery:
Support digital delivery, modeling, and information management across all project stages from concept to completion.
- Education & Licensing:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering with substantial tunneling experience;
Professional Engineer License (P.Eng.) in BC. - Technical
Skills:
Comprehensive geotechnical knowledge with deep understanding of geological conditions, rock mechanics, hydrogeology, ground improvement, and seismic design of underground structures. - Design & Analysis:
Proficiency in analytical and numerical modeling methods (FE soil interaction, seismic, and tunnel lining/face pressure design) for tunnels, shafts, caverns, and foundations in urban and seismic environments. - Software Proficiency:
Skilled in BIM/parametric and design software (AutoCAD, Dynamo, Grasshopper, RS2/3, SWEDGE, UNWEDGE, DIPS, UDEC, FLAC/FLAC3D, Plaxis 2D/3D, Sofistik, etc.). - Tunneling
Experience:
Demonstrated proficiency across multiple tunneling methods (TBM, SEM, cut-and-cover, soft ground, hard rock) including design-build projects and preparation of specifications/contract documents. - Project
Experience:
Minimum 15 years in AEC industry with leadership in producing, reviewing, and ensuring quality of design deliverables for complex urban underground projects. - Regulatory & Regional Knowledge:
Familiarity with North American codes and standards; experience working in BC and West Coast US seismic regions preferred.
