Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shotcrete Sprayer to join our team for a high-profile metro tunneling project in Toronto. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the precise and safe application of shotcrete to tunnel walls and other underground structures, ensuring strict compliance with project specifications and internationally recognized standards, such as EFNARC or ACI. This role demands a strong understanding of underground construction techniques and the ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate advanced shotcrete spraying equipment, specifically the Normet Spraymec 8100 VC, to apply concrete to tunnel surfaces and underground structures.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-operation inspections and perform regular maintenance on shotcrete equipment to guarantee peak performance and minimize downtime.
  • Apply shotcrete in accordance with EFNARC or ACI standards, ensuring high-quality surface finishes and structural integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, geotechnical teams, surveyors, and other operators to optimize shotcreting activities and meet project deadlines.
  • Adapt spraying techniques based on dynamic site conditions and changing project requirements, ensuring proper thickness and adherence of shotcrete.
  • Prepare and document accurate records of shotcrete application, including sample testing for strength requirements (e.g., round panels, beams, cylinders) as per project and safety specifications.
  • Identify operational inefficiencies or mechanical issues, promptly report them to supervisors, and implement corrective actions to prevent disruptions.
  • Ensure effective ventilation, dust control, and air quality maintenance within the tunnel, complying with health and safety standards.
  • Maintain constant vigilance for potential hazards (e.g., unstable ground, water ingress, gas emissions) and mitigate risks by taking preemptive measures.
  • Participate in regular safety briefings, drills, and training sessions, ensuring a strong commitment to health and safety protocols.
  • Use and enforce the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), promoting a safe and compliant work environment.
Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of proven experience operating shotcrete equipment in tunneling, mining, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Expertise in using the Normet Shotcrete Machine - Spraymec 8100 VC or equivalent machinery.
  • Proficiency in shotcreting techniques and knowledge of concrete mixtures, with a focus on achieving early strength for personnel entry.
  • Ability to follow detailed technical drawings and project blueprints.
  • In-depth understanding of shotcrete application testing for various structural and safety tests.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with acute attention to detail in a highly technical environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with cross-functional project teams.
  • Commitment to safety, with experience in implementing and adhering to stringent safety practices in hazardous underground environments.
  • Flexibility and stamina to work 12-hour shifts, 5 days a week, in confined spaces and variable environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in large-scale urban metro projects or tunneling operations.
  • Advanced knowledge of underground construction techniques and mining operations.
  • Certifications from EFNARC or ACI in shotcrete application and testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex operational issues in high-pressure environments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently under strict deadlines.
  • Proven dedication to fostering a safety-first culture in past roles.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires working in underground environments, often in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Exposure to physical labor, varying environmental conditions, and potential hazards is inherent to the role.
  • Full adherence to safety protocols, including wearing PPE at all times, is mandatory for this position.
