GFT is seeking a Senior Municipal Engineer - Utilities to join our Transportation Group. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Toronto, Ontario office.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Senior Municipal Engineer - Utilities
, you will be engaged in the planning, design and construction of wet utilities (watermains, storm and sanitary sewer systems) to support roads, facilities, environmental and transit assignments. You will be directly involved and/or responsible for the collection and review of field data; technical analysis; completion of concept, preliminary and detailed design of storm, sanitary and watermains including the preparation of drawings, calculations, reports, specifications/contract documents and cost estimates.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Actively contribute to engineering design assignments in a team environment on a wide variety of multidisciplinary project teams
  • Developing and validating design calculations.
  • Provide field support with project field inspections, construction inspection and administration, as assigned
  • Collaborate with internal project team, reporting on project status, issues and mitigations
  • Project Leadership & Delivery:
    Lead the planning, design, and construction of wet utilities (watermains, storm and sanitary systems) for transportation and municipal projects. Ensure designs meet technical standards, budgets, and schedules.
  • Design Oversight:
    Direct and validate calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by the team. Oversee the production of concept, preliminary, and detailed designs.
  • Team & Client Coordination:
    Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and maintain proactive communication with clients, municipalities, and regulators.
  • Field Support:
    Provide technical guidance during construction, including site inspections, administration, and issue resolution.
  • Regulatory & Quality Compliance:
    Prepare and review permit applications, ensure compliance with municipal and provincial standards, and perform QA/QC reviews of deliverables.
  • Collects, reviews and incorporates municipal design standards, civil and third-party utility layouts and related reference materials in preparing designs.
  • Prepares and submits permit applications to regulatory and municipal agencies as applicable.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with project team, client and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains, tracks and updates project design records and files.
  • Performs related duties and tasks as assigned or required.
  • What you will bring to our firm:

  • University Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering or related field of practice is required
  • Registered .
  • 10 – 15 years of experience in planning, design and/or construction of wet utilities.
  • Proficiency with watermain and sewer design calculations
  • Working knowledge of drafting software including AutoCAD & Microstation
  • Working knowledge AutoCAD Civil 3D or Bentley Open Roads software related to sewer and watermain modelling is an asset
  • Knowledge of industry standards, permitting/approval processes, and various delivery models
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Preferred familiarity with MECP, Conservation Authorities, lower tier, and upper tier municipalities approvals processes
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills
