Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Camp Counsellor, Arts & Special Programs will support the Section Head, Arts & Special Programs with the planning, supervision and facilitation of all arts and special programs, with a focus on best guest experience. This role provides on-floor leadership, supports consistent program delivery, and mentors counsellors within the arts and special programs area. This role contributes to program quality and staff development while remaining a front-line facilitator scheduled into programs.

The Senior Counsellor does not hold formal managerial authority but acts as a key on-floor support to the Section Head, helping ensure programs run safely, smoothly, and consistently.

Essential Functions

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the arts & special programs team through mentorship and act as a liaison between the sports and adventure and leadership teams.
  • Energetically and inclusively facilitate arts and special programs, including but not limited to visual arts, music, drama, theme days, special events, camp-wide activities, and pop-up programming.
  • Support the consistent execution of arts & special programs plans as developed in partnership with the Section Head.
  • Ensure guest safety by adhering to CNIB Lake Joe policies and procedures, and the standards of the Ontario Camping Association and Public Health.
  • Make and monitor an in/out document for tracking of campers in and out of the respective program area.
  • Energetically and inclusively facilitate and supports ports and adventure and non-sports and adventure programming, as assigned, and adapt programs so that they are accessible for all participants.
  • Provide on-floor guidance, support, and informal mentorship to Camp Counsellors and Junior staff during programs.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing safety concerns within program spaces and report issues to the Section Head.
  • Support staff by answering routine questions and assisting with problem-solving in real time, escalating concerns when appropriate.
  • Assist guests by taking an active role in all dining room duties, including serving meals, meal set up and clean up.
  • Provide support, guidance and leadership to staff volunteers, guests, and visitors.
  • Participate in off-site programs and excursions as required.
  • Support the set-up and clean-up of program areas, ensuring required equipment and materials are available and properly maintained.
  • Report any low materials or issues with equipment to the appropriate program head.
  • Alongside other counsellors, fill out the daily opening and closing logs for respective programs and ensure that all program materials are present and in working order.
  • On a rotational basis, be part of the emergency response team, which includes being on call, present on site and available to respond to emergencies.
  • Promote and encourage participation in programs through endorsement of activities to guests.
  • Maintain documentation of any accidents or incidents and provide this documentation to the appropriate leadership member.
  • During youth weeks:
    Camp counsellors will be scheduled to ensure the 24/7 supervision of youth campers. Camp counsellors will be assigned to a group of campers and as a team, will be responsible for ensuring the overall mental, physical and emotional well-being of campers.
  • During the spring season:
    Setting up program areas and ensuring that all required resources are available and helping with small maintenance tasks.
  • Work as a team member, taking on other areas of responsibility as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills including patience and communication
  • Experience and knowledge of teambuilding, initiative tasks and leadership skill programming
  • Experience in arts, creative, or event-based programming
  • Willingness to be cross-discipline trained on facilitating non-arts and special programs areas
  • Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
